Chapter 24 - The Reckoning at the Federal Penitentiary

The harsh, fluorescent lighting of the high-security federal holding facility hummed with a sterile, soul-crushing monotony. Inside the maximum-security visitation booth, separated by a thick pane of reinforced ballistic glass, Arthur Vance sat upright in his crisp orange jumpsuit, his handcuffed wrists resting calmly on the metal table.
Across the glass sat Marcus Vance—not Arthur's son, but his longtime corporate fixer and general counsel, who had managed to evade the initial federal sweeps by cooperating just enough with prosecutors to secure temporary immunity.
"You look tired, Marcus," Arthur said, his voice smooth, calculating, and entirely devoid of remorse. A faint, chilling smirk played at the corners of his mouth. "I expected better results from the security detail at the Estes Park cabin. I specifically instructed them to secure the hardware token before midnight."
Marcus swallowed hard, wiping a bead of nervous sweat from his forehead. He glanced anxiously around the sterile room before leaning closer to the intercom speaker.
"The team failed, Arthur," Marcus whispered harshly, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to maintain composure. "Your sons... they fought through the perimeter. Liam drew our men away while Jason escaped with the hardware wallet. The cryptographic token was delivered directly to federal cyber-investigators at 11:58 PM."
For the first time since his arraignment, the absolute composure in Arthur Vance’s eyes flickered. His fingers twitched against the metal cuffs, the cold analytical assessment temporarily giving way to genuine fury.
"Delivered?" Arthur repeated, his voice dropping an octave into a low, venomous hiss. "You let a couple of amateurs outsmart forty years of financial architecture? Those smart contracts represented the entire liquidity pool required to fund our appellate defense and judicial leverage!"
"It's over, Arthur," Marcus said, his voice breaking slightly as he stared down at his hands. "The DOJ has the root compliance overrides. The SEC is seizing every subsidiary account in Zurich, Panama, and the Caymans as we speak. The federal receivers have locked down the 35th-floor executive suite permanently. You don't have an empire anymore. You don't even have bail."
Arthur stared at him through the glass for a long, suffocating moment. The silence in the visitation booth felt heavier than any prison wall.
Then, slowly, the cold smirk crept back onto his face. He leaned back in his chair, his posture straightening with an eerie, unbreakable pride.
"An empire isn't destroyed just because the crown slips, Marcus," Arthur murmured softly, his eyes locking onto the bulletproof glass with terrifying intensity. "Men like me write the rules of the game long before the board is ever set. My sons think they've won a war because they secured a piece of plastic in the snow. They have no idea what doors they just unlocked."

Marcus stared at him in horror, realizing that even behind bars, trapped inside a maximum-security cage, Arthur Vance was already orchestrating his next move.
