Chapter 15 - New Horizons

The Monday morning air was crisp and biting, the sky an impossibly bright, cloudless blue that contrasted sharply with the towering snowbanks lining the Denver thoroughfares.
Jason and I stood outside the imposing granite steps of the state courthouse downtown, watching the steady stream of reporters, camera crews, and federal marshals bustling through the grand revolving doors. Inside, Arthur Vance was scheduled for his initial bond hearing—a proceeding that would mark the formal dismantling of an empire built on deception, coercion, and corporate ruthlessness.
"You don't have to come inside with me," Jason said, adjusting the lapel of his charcoal wool coat. He looked different today—older, perhaps, but standing taller, with an air of quiet dignity that I hadn't seen in him since we were boys.
"I'm not going to let you walk in there alone," I said, offering him a firm, reassuring nod. "We finish what we started."
Jason smiled—a genuine, unforced smile that reached his eyes. "Thank you, Liam. For everything. If you hadn't answered that phone call on Friday night... I don't know where I'd be right now."
"You would have found a way," I replied, clapping him on the shoulder. "Survival runs in the family. We just had to learn how to direct it at the right target."
As we turned to climb the courthouse steps together, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen. It was an encrypted text message from my unit commander at the base, confirming my return flight details and noting that the unit's charitable fund had been fully restored and audited by federal regulators without a single cent missing or compromised.
My soldiers' families were safe. The holiday stipends were secure. The unit's morale was intact.

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, took a deep breath of the cold mountain air, and followed my brother through the heavy glass doors into the warm, humming interior of the building. The past few days had been a battlefield of a very different kind—one fought not with rifles and tactical maps, but with integrity, leverage, and the courage to stand against the people who claimed to love us.
As the heavy oak doors closed behind us, shutting out the noise of the city, I knew that whatever deployments or challenges lay ahead of me in the military, I was walking into them unburdened, unbroken, and ready for whatever came next.
