Chapter 7 - Above the Clouds

Ten minutes later, the massive engines of Aurora Skies Flight 742 spooled up with a deep, muffled roar that vibrated gently through the fuselage. The aircraft taxied smoothly away from the gate, leaving the frantic terminal energy far behind.

As the jet lined up on the active runway, the engines surged to takeoff power, pinning passengers gently back into their plush leather seats. With a smooth, effortless grace, the aircraft lifted off the tarmac, climbing steadily through the morning mist and breaking cleanly through the heavy gray cloud cover into a blinding expanse of brilliant blue sky and golden sunlight.

Inside the First Class cabin, the atmosphere had transformed entirely. The residual tension had vanished completely, replaced by a quiet, orderly peace.

Naomi turned her head toward the window. Below them, the sprawling urban landscape of the departure city shrank into a miniature map of roads, rivers, and rooftops, dissolving rapidly beneath an endless ocean of white clouds.

She let out a long, slow breath—the first truly relaxed exhale she had managed in over a week.

Her mind, which was usually racing through risk assessments, quarterly financial projections, subsidiary audits, and crisis management protocols, felt strangely light. The confrontation with the Ellisons, though unpleasant, had served as a stark reminder of why she fought so fiercely to protect the integrity of her companies. Power wasn't about diamonds, expensive suits, or loud voices in airport aisles. It was about responsibility, protection, and quiet, unshakeable strength.

Beside her, Lily shifted softly against her chest. The baby let out a tiny, contented coo, her soft breathing rising and falling in perfect rhythm against Naomi’s jacket. Her tiny fingers relaxed, opening completely under the warmth of the cream cashmere blanket.

Naomi smiled, lifting one hand to gently stroke her daughter’s soft brown hair.

"We're going to be just fine, sweet girl," Naomi whispered softly into the quiet space of seat 2A.

Across the aisle, the flight attendant who had nearly made the biggest mistake of her career walked past quietly, offering a warm, respectful nod and a steaming cup of herbal tea placed gently on a small tray beside Naomi’s armrest. Naomi thanked her with a brief, gracious smile.

The rest of the flight stretched out ahead of them in uninterrupted peace—a quiet, golden bridge between the chaotic responsibilities of the past week and the successful corporate future waiting for them in Seattle.
