Chapter 33 - The Poisoned Ledger

Julian Bradford took a sharp step forward, his patrician composure cracking beneath a sudden surge of offended entitlement. "Arthur," Julian snapped at the clerk, "cancel whatever order this woman has, refund her deposit, and call the private hill patrol. I want her removed from Charles Street immediately."

The elderly clerk looked nervously between Julian and Naomi, his hands trembling over the ledger. "Mr. Bradford... the Carter reservation came through the executive custodial office in New York. The paperwork specifically noted—"

"I don't give a damn about a custodial office in New York," Julian sneered, turning his back on Naomi. "In Boston, a Bradford decides who enters, who buys, and who leaves. Escort her out."

Naomi did not raise her voice. She did not argue. She merely looked at Julian with an expression of quiet, clinical pity, adjusting Lily’s blanket to protect the sleeping baby from the draft of the gallery.

"Hold onto that conviction, Julian," Naomi said softly. "You have an executive board symposium tonight at the Harvard Club on Commonwealth Avenue, do you not? Eight o'clock sharp."

Julian froze. He turned his head slowly, his eyes narrowing into suspicious slits. "How do you know my schedule?"

Naomi offered no answer. She simply turned on her heel and walked calmly out of the gallery, her boots clicking softly against the antique floorboards. The brass bell chimed once more as the heavy oak door closed behind her, leaving Julian and his mother standing in stunned, indignant silence amidst the scent of aged cedar and dust.

Outside, Naomi slipped into the waiting black town car at the base of the cobblestone slope. Marcus Vance was waiting in the passenger seat, his tablet glowing in the darkened interior.

"Did Ethan secure the forensic trade data from the Channel Islands?" Naomi asked, settling Lily comfortably onto her lap.

"Every single bit of it, Ms. Carter," Marcus replied, handing her a thin, encrypted glass tablet. "The transaction manifests are indisputable. Over the past ninety days, Julian Bradford utilized four shell corporations registered in Guernsey to execute short positions against Vanguard’s biotech division totaling forty-seven million dollars. Furthermore, our medical forensics team intercepted his private correspondence with the research directors at Aethelgard Therapeutics."

Marcus touched a file icon on the screen, bringing up an audio recording and email transcripts. "He explicitly threatened to pull their laboratory grants and blacklist their principal investigators if they published the clinical trial data on the infant lung therapy before his holding entity executed the buyout. He intentionally withheld treatment from two hundred critically ill infants in clinical pilot programs just to force the parent company’s valuation into the gutter."

Naomi closed her eyes for a single second. When she opened them, all maternal gentleness was locked away, replaced by the lethal, calculating clarity of an executive about to execute an absolute judgment.

"He thinks his ancestry makes him untouchable," Naomi whispered, looking out the car window as the gas lamps of Beacon Hill faded into the dark avenues of Back Bay. "Tonight, we will show the entire commonwealth what a Bradford looks like when the silver spoon is pulled from his throat."
