Chapter 37 - The SEC Intervention

Thomas Sterling, the federal prosecutor, stepped forward and pulled a crisp document from his breast pocket. "Julian Bradford IV, as of seven o'clock this evening, a federal grand jury has returned a twelve-count indictment against you for securities fraud, market manipulation, interstate wire fraud, and criminal violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act’s clinical compliance statutes."
Sterling signaled toward the back of the hall.
Two federal marshals in plain dark suits walked down the aisle, their heavy service shoes thudding rhythmically against the wooden floorboards. The entire room of Boston blue-bloods sat frozen, their faces pale, watching the unthinkable unfold.
"Wait! Please!" Julian cried, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic whine as the marshals took his tailored arms. "My mother... my family... this will destroy us! Ms. Carter, please! We can settle this privately! We can transfer the patents back to Vanguard tonight! I will resign from the board! Just don't let them march me out of here like a criminal!"
Naomi looked at him with the detached, clinical coldness of a judge reviewing an inevitable verdict.
"You are a criminal, Julian," Naomi said simply. "You traded the breath of sick infants for gold cufflinks and vanity. The only thing you will be managing for the next ten years is your defense fund from a federal cell."
The marshals turned Julian around, pulling his arms behind his back. The sharp, mechanical snap of the steel handcuffs locking around his wrists echoed like a gunshot through the historic Harvard Club.
As he was marched down the center aisle, Julian hung his head, sobbing openly, his tears dripping onto the crimson carpet. His arrogance, his ancestry, his billions in paper wealth—all of it had been reduced to ashes in less than fifteen minutes by a woman who had never once raised her voice.
Naomi turned her gaze slowly toward the remaining trustees seated at the head table. Men who controlled billions in endowment funds sat trembling beneath her gaze, terrified of what her next words might be.
"Marcus," Naomi instructed softly.
"Yes, Ms. Carter?"
"Effective immediately, Vanguard assumes one hundred percent direct operational control of North Atlantic Maritime & Financial Trust," Naomi commanded, her voice steady and unyielding. "Every board member who signed off on the Aethelgard budget suppression is removed from their seats tonight. Conduct a full forensic audit of all regional endowments. If any of these gentlemen shared in Mr. Bradford’s offshore profits, hand their files directly to Mr. Sterling."

"Understood, ma'am," Marcus replied with a crisp nod.
Naomi didn't wait for their apologies or their excuses. She turned on her heel, her black velvet gown sweeping gracefully behind her, and walked out of the hall into the crisp autumn night, leaving the shattered remnants of Boston’s proudest dynasty in her wake.
