Chapter 48 - The Winter Gala at the Met

The following evening, the great glass facade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Sackler Wing blazed with golden light, illuminating the ancient sandstone facade of the Temple of Dendur. Outside, limousines and armored Maybachs stretched three blocks down Fifth Avenue, discharging hundreds of Manhattan’s elite for the annual Winter Solstice Benefactors Gala.

Inside, beneath the towering glass atrium overlooking the snow-covered paths of Central Park, the atmosphere was a symphony of high-society decadence. Waiters in white gloves carried silver trays of vintage Dom Pérignon, while women draped in couture silks and millions in archival diamonds mingled with European royalty, tech billionaires, and federal judges.

Near the grand reflecting pool, Camilla Harrington was holding court among a circle of fawning socialites. She was draped in a breathtaking scarlet Valentino gown, wearing a ruby and diamond choker valued at three million dollars, sipping champagne and laughing loudly.

Because Lawrence Harrington had kept his catastrophic meeting at the Knickerbocker Club entirely hidden from his family overnight, Camilla was completely oblivious to the financial earthquake that had occurred twenty-four hours earlier. She genuinely believed her father was about to be named Executive Chairman of Vanguard, and she was behaving like an uncrowned princess celebrating her coronation.

"I told my father that the moment the board vote is finalized on Friday, we are immediately stripping the Carter name from the children’s pavilion," Camilla declared loudly, her voice carrying across the marble reflecting pool. "That woman had the audacity to lecture me about discipline yesterday! An uncultured, plain-dressed nobody who carries her own baby through clinics like a common nursemaid! She thinks that having a family trust gives her class. Well, by tomorrow, she’ll be nothing more than a minority footnote in our corporate history!"

Her friends giggled sycophantically, raising their glasses in agreement.

Then, the ambient noise in the massive glass atrium dropped into an abrupt, stunning silence.

At the top of the grand marble staircase leading down into the Temple of Dendur, a lone figure appeared.

Naomi Carter descended the stairs with an effortless, regal grace that made every other woman in the room feel instantly invisible. She wore a bespoke midnight-sapphire velvet gown that hugged her silhouette with architectural elegance, sweeping across the marble steps with quiet majesty. Around her throat was the historic Carter Diamond—a legendary fifty-carat flawless blue stone that had not been seen in public for thirty years, catching the reflections of the ancient Egyptian sandstone and throwing dazzling prisms of azure light across the atrium.

Beside her walked Marcus Vance and former Mayor Michael Sterling, both in white tie, their expressions rigid with solemn, unyielding respect.

Camilla Harrington’s laughter died in her throat. She stared at the sapphire gown, at the legendary blue diamond, and at the unmistakable aura of untouchable sovereignty radiating from the woman she had mocked thirty-six hours earlier.

"What is she doing here?" Camilla hissed, clutching her ruby necklace defensively. "Who invited her? This is our night!"

Ignoring the terrified whispers of her companions, Camilla’s arrogance pushed her past all rational boundaries. She gathered the train of her scarlet gown and marched directly into Naomi’s path, stopping right beside the edge of the reflecting pool.

"Well, well," Camilla sneered, her voice trembling slightly with venomous defiance. "The nanny decided to dress up and play high society tonight. Did you leave your brat with a babysitter so you could come beg my father for mercy before the board removes you on Friday?"
