Chapter 42 - The Upper East Side Encounter

The following morning broke over Manhattan in crisp, crystalline clarity. The overnight frost had dusted the bare branches of Central Park with a delicate layer of silver, and the grand limestone pre-war facades along Fifth Avenue gleamed beneath the pale winter sun.

Before attending to the complex corporate affairs awaiting her downtown, Naomi had scheduled a routine developmental wellness examination for Lily at the Halcyon Children’s Medical Pavilion on East 76th Street. The pavilion was an internationally renowned pediatric institute, funded primarily through private endowments, catering to diplomats, civic leaders, and families seeking the highest tier of pediatric care.

Naomi arrived without fanfare. Dressed in an unadorned camel-wool coat, tailored dark trousers, and low leather walking boots, she walked through the polished brass doors carrying Lily in a sleek, ergonomic front carrier. Lily was bundled warmly in a powder-blue down bunting, her curious eyes darting between the marble fountains and the gentle classical music echoing through the sunlit rotunda.

At the private executive reception desk, Naomi presented Lily’s registration card to the intake coordinator. "Good morning. We have a ten-thirty appointment with Dr. Kensington."

"Of course, Ms. Carter," the receptionist said politely, typing into the terminal. "Dr. Kensington is finishing a consultation and will be with you in the garden salon momentarily. Please make yourself comfortable."

Naomi nodded with a polite smile, turning toward the quiet lounge where two other mothers sat reading quietly. But before she could take three steps, the heavy glass entryway swung open with aggressive velocity.

"I don't care if his calendar is full!" a shrill, haughty voice echoed across the vaulted ceiling.

Sweeping into the pavilion was a young woman in her late twenties, draped in an oversized chinchilla fur coat that practically dragged across the marble floor. Her platinum hair was pulled into a severe ponytail, her fingers glittered with oversized yellow diamonds, and she was trailed by an exhausted-looking nanny pushing an ornate, gilded European designer stroller.

This was Camilla Harrington—heiress to the Harrington Capital fortune, daughter of Lawrence Harrington, and one of the most notoriously abrasive fixtures of Manhattan’s elite charity circuit.

"Dr. Kensington needs to see Master Archer immediately," Camilla barked at the receptionist, slamming her crocodile Hermes bag onto the marble counter. "He sneezed twice during his infant polo lesson this morning, and we have a private luncheon at the Colony Club at noon. Pull his file right now."

The receptionist swallowed hard, maintaining a strained professional smile. "Ms. Harrington, Dr. Kensington is currently scheduled with another patient who arrived on time. If you’d like to have a seat in the VIP lounge—"

"Have a seat?" Camilla scoffed, her voice rising to a theatrical screech that caused Lily to stir uncomfortably against Naomi’s chest. "Do you have any idea whose name is on the benefactors' plaque in your main lobby? My father chairs the endowment committee! I don't wait behind common walk-ins!"

Camilla turned sharply, her gaze landing on Naomi, who was standing quietly near the garden entrance, gently patting Lily’s back to soothe her from the sudden noise.

Camilla’s eyes swept down Naomi’s attire—the unbranded wool coat, the sensible leather boots, the simple infant carrier—and her lip curled into a sneer of pure, aristocratic contempt.

"Look at this," Camilla snapped, pointing a manicured, emerald-cut finger directly at Naomi. "You’re letting low-tier registry clients wander around the private floor while my son is waiting? Tell this woman and her child to clear out to the public annex down the street. I require the entire private suite for Archer’s examination."
