Chapter 27 - The Forensic Reckoning

The entire boardroom seemed to run out of oxygen. Thorne’s directors shifted nervously in their seats, exchanging frantic, uncertain glances. No one had ever spoken to Dominic Thorne with such casual, dismissive authority in his own building.
Dominic’s laughter died instantly. His square face hardened into an iron mask of fury, his veins pulsing visibly along his thick neck.
"Do you have any idea who you’re talking to, girl?" Dominic growled, standing up slowly, using his massive physical frame to exert psychological dominance. "I am Dominic Thorne. I built this division with my bare hands. You might hold a pretty surname on a piece of trust paper in New York, but in Chicago, I am the law. You don't walk into my boardroom with a stroller and issue orders to me!"
Naomi turned slightly toward Clara. "Clara, please take Lily into the private executive lounge adjacent to the office. This conversation is about to become somewhat clinical."
"Right away, Ms. Carter," Clara whispered respectfully. With practiced smoothness, Clara turned the pram around and walked through the private side doors, sealing the soundproofed wood behind her.
The moment the door clicked shut, Naomi’s demeanor shifted.
The maternal warmth vanished completely, replaced by the terrifying, razor-sharp aura of a sovereign executive who had commanded multi-billion-dollar conglomerates before Dominic Thorne had ever learned how to cook an operational ledger.
Naomi took two slow, measured steps forward. Her heels clicked with rhythmic, devastating precision against the polished hardwood border of the room.
"Marcus," Naomi said, not taking her eyes off Dominic.
From behind the executive security detail, Marcus Vance stepped forward, carrying a heavy, encrypted titanium briefcase. He set it flat on the granite table, unlocked the biometric latch with his thumb, and opened the lid. Inside lay three pristine, red-bound folders bearing the official gold seal of the United States Department of Transportation and the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division.
"Let us discuss what you built with your bare hands, Dominic," Naomi began, her voice calm, clear, and cold as a midwinter frost. "Over the past forty-eight hours, Vanguard’s central compliance team, operating under my direct executive authority, completed a forensic audit of the Great Lakes maritime fuel subsidies."
Dominic scoffed, though his left fist clenched tightly behind his back. "Audit all you want. Our fuel allocations are vetted by regional port authorities."
"They were vetted by regional port authorities whom you bribed with three hundred thousand dollars in luxury skybox tickets and private marina slip fees," Naomi countered smoothly, pulling a printed document from the first folder and sliding it down the polished granite. It stopped precisely in front of Dominic’s water glass.
"Between March of last year and August of this year," Naomi continued relentlessly, "you diverted twenty-eight point four million dollars in federal maritime maintenance grants into a shell entity registered in Limassol, Cyprus, under the name 'Aegean Blue Maritime.' An entity whose sole beneficial owner is your brother-in-law."
The color began to drain from Dominic’s face. His mouth opened slightly, but no words emerged.
"And while you were skimming twenty-eight million dollars to fund your wife’s couture shopping sprees on Oak Street and your private estate in Lake Geneva," Naomi added, her voice dropping into an icy, unyielding register, "you systematically forged the structural safety inspection certificates for eight Vanguard freight barges operating along the Illinois waterway. Two of those barges suffered catastrophic hull stress fractures three weeks ago, which your safety director quietly covered up using falsified maintenance logs."

Naomi paused, looking around the table at Thorne’s senior directors. Every single one of them was staring at their laps, terrified of making eye contact with the woman who held their careers and their freedom in her hands.
"You called me a girl who holds a pretty surname, Dominic," Naomi murmured, leaning forward until her hands rested lightly on the edge of the granite table. "Let me educate you on how real power operates. You do not hold this city. You do not own these docks. And you certainly do not own Vanguard."
