Chapter 38 - The Sanctuary of Science

By 9:30 PM, Naomi’s town car pulled up outside the modern glass-and-steel facade of Aethelgard Therapeutics in the heart of Cambridge’s Kendall Square.
The research facility was quiet, but the third-floor laboratory lights were blazing brightly into the night. Inside, Dr. Evelyn Chen, the lead pediatric molecular biologist who had spent seven years developing the lung therapy, sat slumped at her desk, staring bleary-eyed at a stack of frozen regulatory files. Beside her, half a dozen young research scientists were quietly packing their personal belongings into cardboard boxes, convinced that Julian Bradford’s budget freezes had officially killed their life's work.
The laboratory doors clicked open.
Dr. Chen looked up, her tired eyes widening in surprise as Naomi Carter walked into the sterile, white room. Naomi had discarded her formal evening coat, wearing a comfortable cashmere cardigan over her dress, her posture relaxed yet commandingly poised.
"Dr. Chen," Naomi greeted warmly, extending her hand.
"Yes... hello," Dr. Chen replied, shaking Naomi’s hand hesitantly. "I’m sorry, the lab is closed to visitors. If you’re from the receivership firm—"
"I am Naomi Carter, managing trustee of Vanguard," Naomi introduced herself gently.
Dr. Chen froze, her breath catching in her throat. She had read the news alerts flashing across financial terminals twenty minutes ago: Julian Bradford arrested; North Atlantic Trust seized; Vanguard executing an emergency restructuring.
"Ms. Carter..." Dr. Chen stammered, her voice trembling with emotion. "Are you... are you here to shut down the project?"
Naomi walked over to the glass partition overlooking the automated gene-sequencing suites, her eyes soft as she looked at the rows of high-tech incubators.
"I am here to ensure that no one ever touches your work again, Dr. Chen," Naomi said, turning back to face the research team. "Thirty minutes ago, Vanguard Capital Partners executed an irrevocable legal deed of gift. The entirety of Aethelgard’s pediatric gene-therapy patents has been transferred into a sovereign, non-profit medical endowment: The Lily Carter Children’s Foundation."
Dr. Chen gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears welled in her eyes. "A non-profit endowment...?"
"Yes," Naomi affirmed, her voice filled with absolute conviction. "The treatment will not be sold to private equity. It will not be traded on Wall Street. Vanguard has allocated a fifty-million-dollar emergency grant to complete the FDA expedited filings by the end of the month. Every infant diagnosed with congenital lung failure will receive this therapy free of cost, regardless of their family's wealth or insurance status."
The young scientists in the back of the lab broke into stunned, breathless cheers, embracing one another through tears of profound relief. Seven years of sacrifice, silenced by corporate greed, had just been redeemed in an instant.

Dr. Chen stepped forward, taking Naomi’s hands in hers, weeping openly with gratitude. "Ms. Carter... you didn't just save our research tonight. You saved thousands of children who had no voice."
Naomi smiled—a radiant, deeply peaceful smile that reached her eyes. "A child’s breath is not a commodity, Dr. Chen. It is the only thing worth fighting for."
