Chapter 8 - Cracks in the Foundation

The return to the penthouse was suffocatingly silent. The rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, blurring the glowing skyline of Manhattan into a smeared canvas of neon and shadows. Julian immediately descended into the bunker. He had broken his promise. The massive screens, dormant for three months, were now blazing with light, cycling through facial recognition scans from the gala's security footage.
Abby stood in the doorway of the bunker, her arms crossed, the chill of the underground room seeping into her bones.
"You turned them back on," she said, her voice hollow.
Julian didn't turn around. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard. "I had to, Abby. Vance got too close to you. He bypassed a ten-million-dollar security grid just to whisper in your ear. I need to know how."
"And your solution is to retreat back into your fortress? To lock us away and watch the world through a screen?" Abby stepped down into the room, her eyes flashing with a mix of anger and hurt. "Who is Elias Vance, Julian? Why does he hate you?"
Julian stopped typing. He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples. "Elias was my partner when I first started Cross Industries. He was ruthless. He taught me that trust was a liability, that everyone has a price. When I realized he was using our tech to blackmail government officials, I forced him out. I ruined him. I took everything."
"And now he wants to take everything from you," Abby deduced, a cold realization washing over her. "Including me."
"He wants to prove that I haven't changed. He wants to prove that I'm still the cold, calculating machine he built. That my relationship with you is just another transaction." Julian finally turned to her, his eyes filled with a desperate intensity. "I won't let him touch you, Abby. I will burn this city to the ground before I let him hurt you."
May you like
"I don't want you to burn the city, Julian," Abby whispered, walking over to him and placing a hand on his cheek. "I want you to trust me. We can't fight him if you lock me out."
Julian closed his eyes, leaning into her touch. But deep down, the paranoia was a venom he couldn't easily sweat out.
