Chapter 7 - The Unseen Threat

The charity gala for the Mercer Rehabilitation Clinic was supposed to be Abby’s triumph. Held in the grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel, the event was a spectacular display of high-society elegance. Chandeliers dripped with crystals, casting a radiant glow over the hundreds of guests dressed in haute couture. Waiters navigated the crowd with trays of champagne, while a string quartet provided a sophisticated backdrop to the murmur of elite networking.
Abby stood near the podium, looking regal in an emerald silk gown that mirrored the blazer she had worn in Julian’s office days before. Her father, leaning lightly on a polished wooden cane, was laughing with a group of prominent doctors. It was a picture-perfect moment.
Yet, Julian stood by the grand pillars, a shadow amidst the light. He wore a perfectly tailored tuxedo, but his posture was coiled, predatory. His earpiece, hidden beneath his dark hair, buzzed with constant updates from his security detail. Ever since the incident at the restaurant, Elias Vance—Julian’s former mentor turned bitter rival—had been playing a psychological game, leaving traces of his presence but never showing his face.
"Perimeter is secure, Boss," came the voice of Reynolds, Julian's head of security. "No sign of Vance."
Julian didn't relax. "Keep your eyes on the service entrances. He doesn't walk through the front door."
Abby approached him, handing him a glass of champagne. "You’re scaring the donors, Julian. You look like you're ready to snap someone's neck."
"I'm just making sure the night is perfect for you," Julian lied smoothly, though the tension in his jaw betrayed him.
"Julian, look at me," Abby said softly, forcing him to meet her gaze. "You promised. No more secrets. No more acting like a solitary sentinel on a watchtower. We are in this together."
Before Julian could answer, the ballroom lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then, plunged into absolute darkness.
The crowd gasped. Panic rippled through the room. Julian instantly pulled Abby against his chest, shielding her with his body. In the chaos, a voice whispered directly into Abby’s ear, slicing through the noise.

"He bought you once, Abby. What makes you think he won't sell you out?"
The lights blazed back to life. Julian spun around, his eyes wild, ready to tear apart whoever had been standing there. But the space behind them was empty, save for a bewildered waiter. Abby was trembling, the poison of the whisper already seeping into her mind.
