Chapter 11 - The Descent

For the next twelve hours, the penthouse felt like a tomb. Julian locked himself in the bunker, refusing to speak to Abby. He ordered his security team to covertly surround the park and the clinic, but Vance’s sniper was a ghost; they couldn't locate him without triggering an execution.

Abby sat on the edge of their bed, staring at the floor. The warmth, the flowers, the ambient lighting—it all felt like a sick joke now. Julian was shutting her out, reverting to the cold, isolated machine he used to be. The man who tested people with money. The man who trusted no one.

Unable to take the silence, Abby made her way down to the bunker. She bypassed the biometric scanner using the master override code Julian had given her months ago—a code he hadn't revoked.

Inside, Julian was rapidly coding on a separate, offline terminal.

"Julian," Abby pleaded, her voice cracking. "Talk to me. What are you doing?"

"I'm writing a surrender protocol," Julian lied smoothly, not looking up. "I'm giving him the company."

Abby narrowed her eyes. She knew him too well. She walked over to the monitors. "You're lying. You're writing a counter-virus. You're going to attack his servers when the transfer happens."

Julian stopped typing. "Abby, go upstairs."

"No! If your virus fails, my father dies!" Abby yelled. "You're risking his life to save your damn company!"

Julian stood up, kicking his chair back. "I am trying to save ALL of it! Vance won't honor the deal! He wants to break me by breaking you!"

"Then let him break you!" Abby cried out, tears flowing freely. "For once in your life, surrender! Show me that my father's life is worth more than your algorithms!"

Julian looked at her, his face a mask of agony. He stepped forward and grabbed her by the shoulders. "You think I care about the money? I care about YOU. But I know Vance. If I show weakness, he strikes. I have to be ruthless to protect you."

"I don't want a ruthless machine," Abby whispered, pulling away from him. "I want the man who drank coffee in my office and held my hand." She turned and walked out of the bunker, leaving Julian alone in the cold, blue light.
