Chapter 6 - The Echoes of the Past

The restaurant was a subterranean marvel, a hidden jewel buried beneath the chaotic pulse of Manhattan. Accessible only by a private elevator that required a biometric scan—a detail Julian handled with a casual wave of his hand—the dining room was a masterclass in atmospheric design. Vaulted ceilings of exposed brick were dimly illuminated by flickering candlelight, while shadows danced along the velvet-draped walls. A jazz pianist played a melancholic, sultry tune in the corner, the notes drifting through the air like smoke.

Abby sat across from Julian, the soft, golden light catching the intricate lace of her midnight-blue dress. She looked breathtaking, a striking contrast to the cold, utilitarian world Julian had once inhabited. For the first time in years, Julian felt a profound sense of peace. The phantom weight of his ruthless corporate empire seemed to lift from his shoulders when he looked into her eyes.

"I must admit, Mr. Cross," Abby said, her lips curving into a soft, teasing smile, "when you said dinner outside the penthouse, I didn't expect a fortress disguised as a Michelin-star restaurant."

Julian chuckled, swirling the deep red wine in his crystal glass. "Old habits, Abby. I wanted somewhere secluded. Somewhere the paparazzi, the board members, and the rest of the world couldn't reach us. Tonight, it's just you and me."

Their conversation flowed effortlessly, moving from the successes of her father's rehabilitation to the ridiculous demands of Julian's eccentric board of directors. But the tranquil atmosphere was abruptly shattered when a sommelier approached their table, carrying a silver tray. Resting upon it was a bottle of Château Margaux 1990—a phenomenally rare vintage—and a small, black envelope.

"Compliments of a gentleman across the room, sir," the sommelier murmured, bowing slightly before retreating.

Julian’s relaxed posture vanished in an instant. His jaw clenched, and the warmth in his dark eyes iced over. Abby watched, her heart skipping a heavy beat as the familiar, dangerous aura of the 'old' Julian returned. He picked up the black envelope, slicing it open with a silver steak knife.

Inside was a single card. The handwriting was sharp, elegant, and chillingly familiar.

“Beautiful night for a reunion, Julian. The game isn’t over. - Elias.”

Julian crushed the card in his fist. Abby reached out, her hand covering his rigid knuckles. "Julian? What is it? Who is Elias?"

"A ghost," Julian replied, his voice dangerously low, his eyes scanning the shadowy corners of the restaurant. "Someone who thinks he can tear down what I’ve built. What we’ve built." He stood up, throwing a stack of hundred-dollar bills on the table. "We’re leaving. Now."
