Chapter 14 - The Collapse

The progress bar on Vance's screen instantly turned blood red. The numbers began to run backward.
"What is this?" Vance demanded, his face twisting in rage as alarms began blaring in the background of his video feed. "What did you do?!"
"I didn't transfer the source code," Abby said, a triumphant smirk finally breaking across her face. "I transferred a polymorphic worm disguised as the code. It just bypassed your firewall. It's currently wiping your offshore accounts, deleting your blackmail files, and broadcasting your location to the FBI."
"NO!" Vance screamed, slamming his fists on his desk.
In the warehouse, Julian watched the servers spark and fry as the worm overloaded the localized system. "It's done, Abby," he breathed into the comms. "He's crippled."
Suddenly, the warehouse doors blew open. Vance's backup team flooded in. A chaotic firefight erupted. Julian dove behind a concrete pillar as bullets chewed through the plaster above his head.
"Julian!" Abby screamed, hearing the deafening gunfire through the earpiece. "Julian, talk to me!"
Julian gritted his teeth, returning fire. "Stay in the bunker, Abby! Lock the blast doors!"
He signaled to Reynolds. They were outnumbered. Julian saw a mercenary flanking his men. Without hesitating, Julian broke cover, sprinting across the open floor to tackle the gunman. A shot rang out. Julian felt a burning, searing pain tear through his left shoulder, spinning him to the ground.
He didn't stop. Running on pure adrenaline, he disarmed the man and knocked him unconscious. The distant wail of police sirens pierced the night air. The FBI, guided by Abby’s transmission, was arriving.
The remaining mercenaries dropped their weapons, surrendering to the inevitable. Julian leaned against the cold concrete wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

"Abby," he coughed into the earpiece. "Abby, I'm okay. We won."
In the bunker, Abby collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably—not from fear, but from the overwhelming, crushing relief.
