Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Machine

The psychological warfare escalated over the next two weeks. It started with small things. Abby’s secure emails were marked as read before she opened them. The temperature in her executive office would inexplicably drop to freezing. Then, the financial anomalies began. Vendor contracts for the penthouse were altered, funneling thousands of dollars into untraceable offshore accounts.

Julian was descending into madness. He barely slept, fueled by black coffee and the glaring blue light of his monitors. He had essentially locked down the penthouse. Abby was only allowed to leave with a full security escort, riding in a bulletproof SUV. The freedom they had fought so hard to build was crumbling.

One afternoon, Abby sat at her walnut desk, staring at a discrepancy in the payroll. She traced the IP address of the modification. It wasn't an external hack. It was coming from inside the building's network.

She took the elevator down to the bunker. Julian was pacing, yelling into a phone at his cyber-security team. When he hung up, Abby slammed a printed ledger onto his desk.

"It's an inside job, Julian," she said sharply. "Vance isn't hacking the firewall. He's already inside."

Julian looked at the paper, his eyes narrowing. "That's impossible. Every member of my staff is vetted. Vetted again."

"Except the ones you hired before me," Abby countered. "Look at the digital signature. It's tied to the maintenance protocols for the building's HVAC system. Someone is using the physical infrastructure to bypass your digital walls."

Julian stared at her, a profound sense of awe mixing with his rage. She was brilliant. She wasn't just a domestic manager; she was a tactical mind that rivaled his own.

Suddenly, the monitors in the bunker flickered. The surveillance feeds from the penthouse replaced with a live video feed of Elias Vance. He was sitting in a dark room, smoking a cigar, a cruel smile playing on his lips.

"Hello, Julian," Vance's voice echoed through the speakers. "I see the lovely Ms. Mercer is just as sharp as her file suggested. It’s a shame, really. Such a bright mind, caught in the crossfire of your arrogance."
