Chapter 9 - The Downfall Broadcasted

"Julian, this is an outrage!" Marcus Sterling boomed, stepping forward, his face turning an apoplectic shade of purple. The surrounding crowd immediately formed a tight circle, smelling blood in the water. "You dare bring a domestic servant to the most prestigious gala in the city? Have you completely lost your mind?"

"Her name is Clara Bennett, Marcus," Julian replied, his voice calm, clear, and perfectly carrying to the surrounding journalists whose microphones were edging closer. "Daughter of Arthur Bennett. Does that name sound familiar to you?"

Marcus’s eyes widened imperceptibly. A flicker of genuine panic flashed across his weathered face before he quickly smothered it. "I have no idea who that is! Security! Remove this girl immediately!"

"Don't touch her," Julian warned, taking half a step forward. The sheer lethality in his tone made the two private security guards instantly freeze in their tracks.

Victoria, unable to contain her venomous hatred, stepped out from behind her father, pointing a shaking, manicured finger at Clara.

"You delusional little tramp!" Victoria screeched, completely forgetting her polished persona in front of the press cameras. "You put on an expensive dress and think you're human? You’re garbage! You clean my dust! You think Julian cares about you? He’s using you to spite me! Show everyone your arm! Tell them how you threw yourself under a broom like a pathetic stray dog!"

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

Clara didn't flinch. She met Victoria’s wild, hateful eyes with an expression of profound, pitying calm.

"I didn't throw myself under a broom to spite you, Victoria," Clara said, her voice clear, melodious, and carrying through the quiet room. "I threw myself between you and a defenseless seventy-two-year-old woman whom you were attempting to assault."

A collective gasp swept through the high-society crowd. Reporters began whispering frantically into their recording devices.

"Lies! She's lying!" Victoria screamed, looking around frantically at the horrified faces of her social peers. "Daddy, tell them she's lying!"

"She doesn't need to lie," Julian said coldly.

Julian raised his left hand and signaled the tech booth at the far end of the ballroom.

Instantly, the massive, sixty-foot LED screens flanking the main stage—which were supposed to display the charity foundation's sponsors—flickered and cut out.

A second later, crystal-clear, high-definition security camera footage from the Vance Manor solarium illuminated the entire ballroom.

The video had no sound, but none was needed. The visual brutality was undeniable.

Five hundred elite guests watched in absolute, stunned horror as the screen clearly displayed Victoria Sterling wildly swinging an oak broomstick directly at the frail, retreating figure of Eleanor Vance. They watched Clara Bennett burst into the frame, selflessly throwing her body over the matriarch. They watched the heavy wood strike Clara’s arm with brutal force, sending both women violently crashing to the floor. And they watched Victoria lift the weapon to strike again, completely unhinged.

Murmurs of absolute disgust exploded through the crowd.

"My God... she’s an animal..." a prominent senator’s wife whispered loudly.

"She tried to kill Eleanor Vance?" another voice echoed in horror.

"Turn it off! Turn it off right now!" Marcus Sterling bellowed, rushing toward the stage, but he was suddenly blocked by four federal agents in dark suits flashing gold badges.

"Marcus Sterling?" the lead agent said, stepping directly in front of him. "I'm Special Agent Vance from the Federal Maritime Commission, accompanying agents from the Southern District of New York. We have an arrest warrant for racketeering, federal tariff evasion, and evidence tampering related to the fraudulent bankruptcy of Bennett Maritime."

"What?!" Marcus roared, his face draining of all life. "This is absurd! You have no proof!"

"We have your daughter's encrypted backup drives, Mr. Sterling," the agent replied coldly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

As the handcuffs clicked shut around Marcus Sterling's wrists in front of flashing press cameras, Victoria collapsed to her knees on the parquet floor, clutching her emerald gown, sobbing hysterically as her entire world, her status, and her name disintegrated into irreversible ruin.
