Chapter 7 - Secrets Behind the Maid’s Eyes

Julian stared at the sleek black drive resting on the desk, then back at the woman standing before him. The atmosphere in the office instantly tightened. Julian’s protective demeanor hardened back into that of the suspicious corporate titan.

"Explain," Julian commanded quietly.

Clara took a slow breath, stepping closer to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

"Two years ago, my father was Arthur Bennett. He owned Bennett Maritime, a mid-sized freight company operating out of New Jersey," Clara began, her voice steady but laden with deep, simmering sorrow. "We weren't billionaires like you or the Sterlings, but my father was honest. He had built that company with his bare hands for thirty years."

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly as memories of financial headlines from two years prior resurfaced. "Bennett Maritime went bankrupt overnight. Arthur Bennett was accused of falsifying cargo manifests containing illegal industrial chemicals."

"He was framed," Clara said, turning around, her hazel eyes blazing with an unyielding fire. "Marcus Sterling wanted my father’s deep-water docking berths at the port. My father refused to sell. Three weeks later, someone bribed an inspector, planted forged manifests, and the regulatory agencies shut us down. My father’s heart couldn't take the disgrace. He died of a massive stroke three days after the state seized his assets."

Julian remained silent, listening intently, his analytical mind piecing the puzzle together.

"After he died, I spent eighteen months tracking the paper trail," Clara continued. "I sold everything we had left to hire forensic accountants. But every lead led to a dead end because Marcus Sterling’s private servers are air-gapped and guarded like Fort Knox. The only way to access the off-shore accounts that paid off the corrupt port officials was through the personal digital backups kept in Victoria Sterling’s private residence."

"So you applied for the maid position at my estate," Julian deduced, his voice completely level. "Knowing she spent half her week there."

"Yes," Clara admitted without hesitation, looking directly into Julian's cold eyes. "I took the job. I cleaned the floors. I polished the silver. And three days ago, I finally managed to clone Victoria's cloud backups from her personal tablet while she was at the spa. That drive contains the complete, unredacted financial records proving Marcus Sterling bribed port authorities to bankrupt my father. And more importantly for you..."

Clara tapped the drive with her finger.

"...it contains the proof that the Sterling fleet has been running illegal, uninsured crude oil tankers through international waters, evading federal tariffs for the past five years. If this gets out, Marcus Sterling won't just lose his business ties with you. He will be facing twenty-five years in federal prison."

Julian stared at her for a long, heavy moment. He walked over to the desk, picked up the drive, and weighed it in his palm.

"You had this," Julian said softly. "You could have taken this straight to the Department of Justice or sold it to the highest bidder. Why give it to me?"

"Because yesterday, you looked Victoria Sterling in the eye and threw away a billion-dollar alliance to protect an old woman and a maid," Clara answered, her voice dropping into an emotional whisper. "You have power, Mr. Vance. Real power. I can take this to the authorities, and Marcus Sterling’s high-priced lawyers will bury it in red tape for a decade. But you... you can execute them in public."

Julian looked at the drive, then looked up at Clara. A slow, dangerous smile crept across his lips—the smile of an apex predator that had just been handed the exact weapon he needed to annihilate his prey.

"Clara," Julian said, walking toward her until he stood just inches away. "Do you have an evening gown?"

Clara blinked in surprise. "What?"

May you like

"Tomorrow night is the Metropolitan Charity Gala," Julian murmured, his grey eyes gleaming with pure retribution. "And it seems you and I have a date."
