Chapter 1 - The Strike of Treason

The air inside the grand solarium of Vance Manor was thick with the scent of crushed white lilies and mounting dread. Sunlight filtered through the towering, arched glass panels, casting pristine diamond patterns across the imported Carrara marble floor. It was a space designed for tranquility, an architectural masterpiece of wealth and aristocratic privilege nestled atop the cliffs of Emerald Crest. Yet, on this unseasonably cold Tuesday morning, it felt more like a slaughterhouse waiting for the first strike.
Victoria Sterling stood in the center of the conservatory, her designer silk blouse trembling with violent indignation. Her blonde hair, usually styled in immaculate, soft waves fit for high-society galas, had come undone, wild tendrils framing a face contorted by sheer, unfiltered malice. In her manicured hands, she gripped a heavy oak-handled utility broom, its coarse bristles dragging across the polished floor with an ominous hiss.
"You miserable, pathetic old woman!" Victoria hissed, her voice cutting through the humid stillness like a serrated blade. "You think because your son built an empire, you actually belong in it? You’re nothing but a parasite from the South Side, dragging your dirt into my home!"
Cowering near the stone fountain was Eleanor Vance. At seventy-two, fragile from a lingering pulmonary illness, the matriarch looked like a ghost wrapped in a cashmere shawl. Her hands shook violently against her chest as she leaned against a carved marble plinth for support. She had merely asked Victoria to keep her voice down while speaking to the house staff, unaware that Victoria’s bruised ego—fueled by Julian’s cold distance over the past month—was a powder keg looking for a spark.
"Victoria, please..." Eleanor whispered, her breath wheezing slightly. "You are marrying Julian next month... this is not how a lady conducts herself. Please, put that down."
"Don't you dare patronize me!" Victoria shrieked. Her eyes were bloodshot with an irrational, manic fury. Years of being spoiled by the Sterling oil dynasty had made her entirely unaccustomed to resistance. In her twisted mind, Eleanor was the final obstacle preventing her from gaining absolute control over Julian’s vast estate. "I am the mistress of this house! Not you! And it's high time someone taught you your place!"
With a savage snarl, Victoria raised the heavy broomstick high above her head, her knuckles whitening. The wooden pole cleaved through the air with terrifying speed, aimed directly at Eleanor’s fragile skull. The elderly woman gasped, freezing in sheer terror, closing her eyes as she prepared for the bone-shattering impact.
She never felt it.
From the shadow of the service entrance, a blur of grey linen lunged across the floor. Clara Bennett didn’t hesitate. She didn’t calculate the cost to her employment, nor did she consider the sheer physical peril of intercepting a weapon swung with murderous intent. The young maid, hired barely three months prior, acted on pure, protective instinct.
Clara threw herself directly across Eleanor’s body, her slender frame acting as a human shield.
*CRACK!*
The heavy oak pole struck Clara’s left forearm with sickening, dull force. The shockwave of the blow ripped a ragged gasp from Clara’s throat as the sheer momentum knocked both her and Eleanor violently to the marble floor. Water sloshed from the nearby fountain, soaking the hems of their skirts as they tumbled together into a heap of bruised limbs and ruffled fabric.
A violent, inflamed crimson welt rose instantly across Clara’s pale skin, stretching from her wrist nearly to her elbow, the flesh already swelling beneath the bruised surface. The pain was blinding, a searing white heat that made her vision swim, but Clara did not cry out. Instead, through gritted teeth, she curled her body tighter around Eleanor, shielding the old woman's head against the cold stone.
"You filthy little insect!" Victoria screamed, panting heavily, lifting the broom once more. "How dare you touch me? How dare you interfere when I'm disciplining this house!"
"You need to learn who's in charge of this house!" an arrogant shout echoed, Victoria blindly justifying her brutality, completely intoxicated by her own cruelty.
Before she could bring the broom down a second time, the heavy mahogany double doors of the conservatory were flung open with an explosive bang that shook the glass panes above.
