Chapter 8 - The Gala of Retribution

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of gold, crystal, and toxic vanity. New York’s elite had gathered in full force: hedge fund managers, political dynasties, international ambassadors, and media moguls, all sipping vintage champagne under chandeliers that sparkled like frozen stars.

Near the central dais, Marcus Sterling stood holding court. He was a broad-shouldered, silver-haired man in his late fifties with a face like weathered granite, wearing an arrogant smirk that matched his daughter’s. Beside him was Victoria, looking radiant and triumphant in an emerald-green silk backless gown, dripping in emeralds and diamonds.

The media cameras were already flashing around them. Victoria had spent the last hour whispering tearful, fabricated stories of Julian Vance’s "cold cruelty" to influential society columnists, positioning herself as the brave woman who walked away from a toxic billionaire.

"Tonight, we set the record straight," Marcus rumbled quietly to his daughter, clinking his champagne glass against hers. "Julian Vance thinks his money makes him invincible. By the time I step up to that podium, Vance Global will be a pariah in this town."

"I want him ruined, Daddy," Victoria whispered viciously, her eyes flashing with pure malice. "I want that arrogant bastard on his knees. And that miserable little maid of his—I’ll make sure she’s blacklisted from every domestic service agency on the East Coast!"

Suddenly, the ambient hum of conversation in the ballroom began to die down.

A murmur swept through the crowd near the grand entrance, rippling outward like a shockwave. Heads turned. Glasses were lowered. Flashbulbs abruptly pivoted away from the Sterlings, aimed toward the double doors at the top of the marble staircase.

Julian Vance had arrived.

He looked breathtakingly formidable. Clad in a midnight-black Tom Ford tuxedo that accentuated his powerful frame, Julian radiated an aura of pure, untouchable authority.

But it was not Julian who caused the room to collectively gasp.

It was the woman on his arm.

Clara Bennett glided down the staircase beside him, looking like royalty reborn. She wore a breathtaking, midnight-blue velvet evening gown with a high, structured collar that plunged into an elegant, modest neckline, accentuating her graceful posture. Her chestnut hair was swept up into an intricate, classic chignon, revealing her porcelain neck. And across her left forearm, visible through the sheer, delicate lace sleeve designed specifically for the evening, was the faint, unmistakable shadow of the protective bandage beneath.

She didn't look like a maid. She looked like a queen accompanying an emperor.

Victoria’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the polished parquet floor with a loud, violent crash.

"What... what is she doing here?!" Victoria choked out, her face draining of all color. "Julian brought *her*?!"

"Who the hell is that?" Marcus demanded, glaring at his daughter.

"That's the maid!" Victoria hissed, her voice rising into an octave of panicked hysteria. "The little bitch who got in my way!"

Julian guided Clara smoothly through the parting sea of billionaires and celebrities, ignoring the barrage of flashing cameras. He didn't rush. Every step was deliberate, calculated, dripping with supreme confidence.

When they reached the center of the ballroom, Julian stopped directly in front of the Sterlings.

"Marcus. Victoria," Julian greeted them, his voice smooth as silk, yet carrying enough edge to slice diamond. "I believe you know my guest."
