Chapter 3 - The Price of a Bruise

For the first time since she had walked into Julian Vance’s life eighteen months ago, Victoria Sterling felt the icy tendrils of genuine dread wrap around her throat.

She looked into the eyes of the man she had planned to marry at St. Patrick’s Cathedral before five hundred elite guests next month. There was no affection there. There was no fond exasperation, no executive patience. There was only the dead, black abyss of a man who was calculating the most efficient way to dismantle her entire existence.

"Julian, be reasonable," Victoria stammered, stepping backward as he loomed over her. Her voice cracked slightly, losing its polished Fifth Avenue cadence. "She’s a maid! She’s paid minimum wage to clean the toilets and take out the garbage! Even if she got a little scrape, I can write her a check for ten thousand dollars right now! It’s nothing!"

"A little scrape?" Julian repeated. His eyes flicked down to the broomstick lying between them, then back up to Victoria’s face. "You swung an oak handle with the full weight of your body at a seventy-two-year-old woman with a heart condition. If Clara hadn't thrown herself in front of you, my mother would be lying here with a fractured skull. Or worse."

"I was frustrated!" Victoria screamed, the veneer cracking again into ugly entitlement. "Do you have any idea how much stress I am under? Planning this wedding while your mother constantly criticizes my choices? She insulted my family, Julian! A Sterling does not tolerate disrespect from someone who grew up in the slums!"

Behind Julian, Clara had pulled a clean handkerchief from her pocket with her good hand and was pressing it against Eleanor’s trembling forehead. Eleanor was weeping softly, holding onto Clara's wrist, careful not to touch the horrific welt.

"Clara," Julian said, not taking his eyes off Victoria.

"Yes, Mr. Vance?" Clara answered, her voice surprisingly steady despite the tears of pain shimmering in her hazel eyes.

"Can you stand?"

"Yes, sir." With remarkable resilience, Clara gritted her teeth and pushed herself up from the wet floor, using her right arm to help Eleanor rise to her feet. Clara stood with an upright, quiet dignity that contrasted sharply with Victoria's erratic, panicked posturing.

Julian’s gaze swept over Clara once more. The contrast was staggering. Clara was bruised, soaking wet, dressed in a humble grey uniform, yet her eyes possessed an unbreakable moral clarity. Victoria, draped in five-thousand-dollar Chanel silk, looked like a hollow, rotten ghoul.

"Call Dr. Hayes immediately," Julian ordered, his voice echoing through the vast solarium. "Tell him to bring an X-ray unit to the estate. Both my mother and Clara will be examined."

"Julian!" Victoria protested, her face flushing crimson with humiliation. "You cannot be serious! You are having our private family physician examine a domestic worker?"

"She is not just a domestic worker," Julian said, taking a slow step toward Victoria. The sheer physical presence of the billionaire forced her back until her spine pressed against the cold glass of the conservatory wall. "Today, she saved the only person on this earth that matters to me. Which is far more than I can say for you."

"I am your fiancée!" she shrieked.

"Not anymore."
