Chapter 2 - Cold Blood on Italian Marble

Julian Vance was a man whose very presence commanded absolute silence in boardrooms that controlled billions. Towering at six-foot-three, clad in a bespoke charcoal-black three-piece suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding posture, he had earned a reputation in the international markets as an unyielding, merciless predator. Yet, in all his years of navigating ruthless corporate takeovers, his face had never looked as terrifying as it did in this exact second.
His steel-grey eyes swept over the scene in a fraction of a heartbeat.
The overturned flower arrangements. The broomstick poised in Victoria’s hands. His frail, beloved mother sprawled helplessly on the floor, gasping for air. And the young maid draped over her, trembling from head to toe.
"Mother!" Julian roared. The veneer of aristocratic composure shattered completely, replaced by pure, visceral horror.
He crossed the conservatory in three long, predatory strides. Victoria, startled by his sudden appearance, let the heavy broom clatter against the marble floor, her manic expression faltering into an instant, rehearsed mask of distress.
"Julian! Darling, thank God you're here!" Victoria cried out instantly, taking a step toward him, her hands coming up to clutch her own throat in mock terror. "Your mother... she attacked me! She became completely unhinged over the wedding arrangements, and this maid—"
Julian didn't even look at her. He didn't hear her. He brushed past his fiancée with such cold, forceful indifference that the displacement of air nearly spun her around on her designer stilettos.
He dropped instantly to his knees beside the fountain, his tailored trousers soaking through with fountain water as he reached for Eleanor. "Mother? Mother, look at me. Breathe. I'm right here."
Eleanor was clutching Clara's apron, her chest heaving violently, tears carving paths through the wrinkles on her cheeks. "Julian... she... she was going to kill me. She swung it at my head..."
As Julian moved to lift his mother, Clara moved back respectfully, despite the agonizing pain radiating through her arm. She cradled her injured limb against her chest, her breathing shallow, but she gently helped position Eleanor into Julian’s arms, ensuring the older woman's head was supported.
"Easy, Mrs. Vance," Clara whispered softly, her voice raspy from shock. "You're safe now. Mr. Vance is here."
That was when Julian saw it.
The sleeve of Clara’s grey uniform had been pushed up during the fall. Across her fair, porcelain skin was a horrific, raised purple-and-crimson ridge where the oak wood had crushed the delicate tissue. The skin was broken in two spots, beads of dark blood welling at the edges of an imprint that clearly outlined the thick shaft of the broom handle. It was an injury born from absorbing a blow meant to shatter bone.
Julian froze. His gaze locked onto that mark. A deadly stillness settled over his entire body, the kind of silence that precedes an extinction-level storm.
He slowly turned his head toward Victoria.
"You went too far!" Clara’s quiet, devastating accusation broke through the room, her voice trembling not with fear of her employment, but with raw moral disgust. "She could have died!"
Victoria scoffed, folding her arms across her chest, trying desperately to regain her haughty composure. "Know your place, you miserable peasant! Julian, are you actually going to listen to a servant who steals from our pantry? I was defending myself! That girl threw herself at me like a feral animal!"
Julian didn't blink. He slowly stood up, placing himself entirely between his mother, the injured maid, and the blonde socialite who claimed to love him.
When he spoke, his voice was dropped to a subterranean register so devoid of warmth, so chillingly flat, that the hairs on the back of Victoria's neck stood straight up.

"The maid was protecting my mother," Julian said, every syllable hitting like a frozen hammer. "You attacked her."
