Chapter 8 - The Ballroom of Wolves

Forty miles south of Munich, deep within the jagged peaks of the Bavarian Alps, stood Schloss Falkenstein.
The ancient castle, perched on the edge of a five-hundred-foot limestone precipice, was glowing with hundreds of crystal chandeliers.
Dozens of exotic supercars and armored limousines were parked along the sweeping cobblestone courtyard, guarded by private military contractors with assault dogs.
Inside the grand ballroom, high-society European billionaires, corrupt foreign diplomats, and corporate oligarchs drank vintage champagne from flute glasses.
They had gathered for the most exclusive black-market financial auction of the decade: the dismemberment of the Vance Corporation.
High above the ballroom floor on the mezzanine terrace, Arthur Vance stepped out from the shadows, dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo.
Beside him walked Clara Jenkins, wearing an emerald-green backless silk gown that concealed a ceramic knife taped along her spine and a compact pistol in her clutch.
Her dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, her bruised skin painted with cosmetic perfection, and her posture commanding absolute deference.
"Look at them," Clara murmured, her voice steady as she observed the room beneath the sparkle of the chandeliers.
"Three European central bankers, the defense minister of an Eastern republic, and five members of your own corporate advisory board," she noted.
"Traitors who feasted at my father's table for twenty years," Arthur replied, his voice vibrating with a quiet, lethal wrath.
In the center of the grand hall, standing beneath a massive portrait of the medieval Bavarian royalty, was an elevated auction stage.
A tall, silver-haired man in a white velvet tuxedo stood behind a mahogany podium, raising a gold-plated auction hammer.
It was not Julian Vance himself; it was Baron Heinrich von Klaus, Julian’s principal financial broker and the architect of the shadow trusts.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Von Klaus announced through the acoustic amplification system, commanding instant silence across the room.
"Tonight, we settle the historical debt of the Vance dynasty," the Baron declared with a sneer.
"We begin with Lot Forty-Two: the sovereign maritime shipping concessions for the North Sea ports, formerly owned by Lady Evelyn Vance," the auctioneer proclaimed.
The high-society crowd murmured with greedy excitement, several European industrialists raising their numbered silver bidding paddles.
"We open the bidding at two hundred million euros," Von Klaus shouted, his eyes scanning the room.
"Five hundred million," a deep, thunderous baritone echoed from the top of the grand marble staircase.
The entire ballroom turned in collective shock as Arthur Vance began his slow, deliberate descent down the wide stairs.
The guests gasped, several oligarchs spilling their champagne as the true king of the dynasty walked straight toward the podium.
Clara followed beside him, her gaze sweeping over the private security guards posted along the walls, daring any of them to twitch.
"Arthur Vance..." Baron Von Klaus stammered, stepping back from the podium as the color drained from his weathered face.
"You are trespassing on private sovereign ground, Herr Vance!" the Baron shouted, his voice cracking with sudden terror.
"Security! Detain this man immediately!" Von Klaus screamed into his microphone.
Six private security contractors stepped forward, their hands dropping toward their concealed weapons beneath their jackets.
Before the first guard could clear his holster, Clara closed the distance in a blur of silk and lethal motion.
Her heel slammed into the lead guard's knee joint, fracturing the bone with a sickening crack that echoed across the ballroom.
She caught his falling weapon in mid-air, spun around his collapsing body, and leveled the barrel directly between the eyes of the second guard.
"Anyone else who touches their weapon will be carried out of this castle in a trash bag," Clara warned, her voice cutting through the hall like a razor blade.
The remaining security men froze in their tracks, paralyzed by the sheer, unhesitating brutality of the young woman in the emerald gown.
Arthur reached the foot of the stage, stepping onto the polished platform and towering over the trembling Baron.
The billionaire reached out, seized the gold-plated auction hammer from the podium, and weighed the heavy metal in his hand.
"The bidding is closed, Heinrich," Arthur said softly, his voice amplified by the podium microphone for every traitor in the room to hear.
"The North Sea ports belong to my mother," Arthur declared, slamming the gold hammer down onto the podium so hard that the mahogany cracked down the center.
"And every single person in this room who placed a bid on my family's blood is already under federal indictment," the billionaire revealed.
Arthur withdrew a slim titanium thumb drive from his tuxedo pocket and held it up before the sea of terrified oligarchs.
"My security director, Clara Jenkins, just transmitted the complete financial ledger of this shadow cartel to Interpol and the federal prosecutor's office," Arthur stated.
"Your bank accounts are currently frozen, your private jets are grounded at every European airfield, and your diplomatic immunity is revoked," he added.
A chorus of panic erupted across the room as dozens of billionaires frantically checked their vibrating smartphones.
Von Klaus fell to his knees on the stage, clutching Arthur’s pant leg with pathetic, shaking hands.
"Arthur... please! It wasn't me! Julian forced my hand! He took my family!" the Baron begged, weeping openly on the platform.
Arthur looked down at the sniveling banker with pure disgust and pulled his leg back, leaving the man collapsed on the floor.
"Where is my uncle, Heinrich?" Arthur demanded, bending down until his face was inches from the broker's ear.
"He is in the mountain fortress... the Eagle's Peak outside Berchtesgaden," Von Klaus sobbed, pointing a shaking hand toward the south.
"He is waiting for you there... he has the entire Caspian grid rigged to detonate at sunrise!" the broker revealed in terror.
Arthur straightened his posture, turning back toward Clara, who stood like an avenging angel amidst the paralyzed elite.
"Call Briggs," Arthur commanded, stepping over the weeping Baron and walking back toward the grand exit.

"Tell him to prep the tactical gunship," Arthur ordered.
"The Architect has chosen his grave, and we are going to bury him in it," Clara replied, tossing the captured weapon to the floor.
