Chapter 13 - The Fortress of Glass

The private estate known as the Villa des Ombres sat perched behind fifteen-foot wrought-iron gates on the exclusive shore of Lake Geneva.

Heavy fog rose from the black waters of the lake, wrapping the sprawling limestone chateau in a shroud of impenetrable mist.

Inside the subterranean rotunda beneath the villa, twelve high-backed leather chairs sat arranged in a perfect circle around an obsidian conference table.

Eleven men and women, dressed in bespoke evening wear and dripping with old-world European diamonds, sat in grim, tense silence.

At the head of the circular chamber sat Victor Sterling, a man of sixty years with cold, predatory gray eyes and silver hair swept back with surgical precision.

His tailored tuxedo was immaculate, his hands folded patiently over a solid gold fountain pen worth more than an ordinary family's home.

"Julian Vance was a clumsy instrument," Victor spoke, his voice identical to the synthetic frequency that had broadcast to the Bavarian bunker.

"His capture changes nothing regarding our operational timeline," Victor declared, looking at the eleven nervous faces before him.

"The global markets are currently stabilized, Victor," an elderly French banker interjected, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with a trembling finger.

"Arthur Vance halted the data wipe before the liquidity freeze could trigger our short positions," the banker warned.

"Arthur Vance is currently flying blind through European airspace with a price on his head," Victor sneered, dismissing the objection with a flick of his wrist.

"By midnight, the Swiss Federal Banking Commission will freeze all corporate accounts belonging to Vance Corporation under fabricated money laundering charges," Victor promised.

"And who will authorize this freeze?" a German industrialist asked, leaning forward over the polished stone.

"The chief commissioner sits in my pocket, along with the interior minister," Victor laughed softly, tapping the gold pen against the obsidian table.

"The Vance dynasty died when Marcus Vance closed his eyes thirty years ago," Victor claimed with absolute finality.

Suddenly, every light within the underground rotunda surged violently and plunged into pitch-black darkness.

The eleven billionaires gasped, chairs scraping across the polished floorboards in sudden, terrified confusion.

"Security, report!" Victor shouted, rising from his leather seat, his composed mask instantly cracking.

A backup emergency generator kicked in with a low hum, bathing the circular room in eerie, crimson emergency lighting.

The massive steel blast doors guarding the entrance to the rotunda did not open; they were violently blown inward with a deafening hydraulic bang.

Heavy smoke poured into the chamber, carrying the scent of flash powder and pulverized titanium.

Walking through the smoke, clad in a tailored three-piece charcoal suit that looked as though it had just stepped out of a Milan boardroom, was Arthur Vance.

Beside him walked Clara Jenkins, dressed in full tactical combat attire, an assault shotgun resting comfortably across her forearms.

Behind them, the four personal bodyguards Victor had stationed outside lay disarmed and unconscious in the marble foyer.

"You shouldn't have left the front gates unlocked, Victor," Arthur said, his voice echoing off the stone walls like a funeral bell.

Victor Sterling froze, his gray eyes widening as he looked at the nephew of his oldest rival.

"Arthur Vance..." Victor whispered, his fingers discreetly moving toward a silent panic button concealed beneath the rim of the table.

Before Victor's finger could travel an inch, Clara fired a single beanbag concussive round straight through the center of the wooden panel.

The impact splintered the wood beneath Victor's hand, shattering the transmitter into plastic dust and forcing the billionaire to stumble back against his chair.

"I wouldn't touch that button if I were you, Mr. Sterling," Clara warned, racking another round into the chamber with a smooth, terrifying clack.

"The Swiss federal tactical unit you called twenty minutes ago has already been intercepted by our private security detail," Clara informed him.

"In fact, they were quite interested in the four metric tons of illicit bearer bonds stored in your lakefront boathouse," she added with a cold smirk.

The eleven members of the Council scrambled to their feet, their faces white with sheer panic.

"Arthur, please!" the French banker stammered, raising his hands in surrender.

"We were manipulated! Sterling told us this was a sanctioned corporate restructuring!" the man pleaded.

"Silence," Arthur commanded, not raising his voice, yet projecting an authority that froze every billionaire in place.

Arthur walked slowly toward the table, tossing the twelve platinum identity tokens onto the obsidian surface.

The heavy metal clattered across the stone, spinning to a halt before their respective owners.

"Your little club is officially dissolved," Arthur announced, stopping directly across from Victor Sterling.

"You think you can walk into Geneva and arrest the twelve most powerful financiers on this continent?" Victor hissed, regaining his venomous posture.

"You have no jurisdiction here, boy!" Victor shouted.

"This is sovereign Swiss territory; you are an armed trespasser in a private residence!" Victor laughed maliciously.

"I am not an armed trespasser, Victor," Arthur replied calmly, taking a crisp parchment document from his breast pocket.

Arthur smoothed the paper against the table and turned it toward the Council.

"This is an international asset seizure warrant signed three hours ago by the International Criminal Court in The Hague," Arthur said.

"Countersigned by the Swiss Federal Attorney General," Clara added, stepping forward with a digital tablet displaying live federal stamps.

"You see, Victor, your daughter Victoria proved remarkably talkative once she realized she was facing thirty years in a maximum-security penitentiary," Arthur revealed.

Victor’s face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated shock.

"Victoria wouldn't betray me..." Victor stammered, his aristocratic voice cracking.

"She traded your offshore account numbers, your private encryption keys, and this exact address for a transfer to a minimum-security facility," Arthur said.

"Treason runs deep in your bloodline, Sterling; it appears your daughter learned the craft directly from you," Clara remarked with cutting precision.

Victor looked around the table at his eleven co-conspirators, but not a single one would meet his gaze.

They were already pushing their platinum tokens away, desperate to distance themselves from the doomed Architect.

"You took my father’s life through thirty years of corporate warfare and stress," Arthur said, leaning over the table until his eyes were inches from Victor's face.

"You tried to beat my mother to death with a baseball bat through your deranged daughter," Arthur continued, each word landing like an anvil.

"And you ordered the murder of Thomas Jenkins because he possessed the proof of your cowardice," Clara whispered, raising her weapon until it pointed at Victor’s heart.

Victor looked down the barrel of the gun, and for the first time in his life, the supreme shadow master felt the ice of absolute terror.
