Chapter 4 - The Shattered Dynasty

By nightfall, the Vance estate was flooded with flashing red and blue lights from federal emergency vehicles.
Elite state investigators moved through the property like shadows, seizing computers, files, and locked safes from the guest suites.
On the upper balcony of the manor, Arthur Vance stood with a glass of neat whiskey, watching the spectacle below.
Beside him, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, sat Lady Evelyn.
Her trembling had finally ceased, replaced by a deep, weary peace.
Clara Jenkins stood slightly behind her chair, her bruised arm properly bandaged in sterile medical gauze.
"Drink your chamomile, Mother," Arthur said gently, kneeling beside her chair to hand her a porcelain teacup.
"Arthur, my boy," Evelyn murmured, placing a fragile hand on his strong cheek.
"If Clara had not stepped between us today, you would have buried me by Sunday," the old woman said, tears forming in her tired eyes.
Arthur’s fingers tightened around his whiskey glass until the crystal groaned under the pressure.
"The people responsible will never see daylight again, Mother," Arthur swore softly.
"Victoria is already in federal custody, and Dr. Hayes was arrested at JFK airport trying to board a private flight to Dubai," he reported.
"What about Gregory?" Evelyn asked suddenly, her voice dropping to an anxious whisper.
Arthur’s jaw tightened, his gaze drifting toward the driveway where a sleek silver sports car sat surrounded by two unmarked tactical vans.
"My dear cousin Gregory thought he could hide among the birthday guests," Arthur said with a cold, humorless chuckle.
"He slipped away during the commotion and tried to erase the manor's primary security servers from the basement sub-station," Arthur revealed.
Clara stepped forward, handing a small metallic flash drive to Arthur.
"He didn't erase them, Mr. Vance," Clara reported.
"I swapped the server backup hard drives three days ago when I first noticed the surveillance loops," Clara explained.
"Everything Gregory accessed—including the private wire transfers to Dr. Hayes—is logged on this drive," she confirmed.
Arthur looked at the flash drive in his palm, then looked up at the young woman with unmasked admiration.
"You anticipated an inside attack on the server infrastructure?" Arthur asked, genuinely astonished.
"My father always said that when wolves hunt an elephant, they don't attack the tusks," Clara replied calmly.
"They sever the tendons behind the knees so the beast falls under its own weight," she stated.
"Gregory Vance was the tendon," Clara added.
Arthur took a slow sip of his whiskey, nodding toward the terrace stairs.
"Let us go introduce my cousin to reality," Arthur said.
Down in the grand foyer, surrounded by towering marble columns and priceless oil paintings, Gregory Vance was pinned against a mahogany table.
Two federal agents held his arms twisted behind his back, while his silk suit jacket hung torn from his shoulders.
"Arthur! Tell these dogs to take their hands off me!" Gregory bellowed, sweating profusely through his designer shirt.
"I am a Vance! I own twelve percent of the voting shares of this conglomerate!" Gregory screamed.
Arthur walked down the grand curved staircase with deliberate, measured steps, Clara following two paces behind him.
"You owned twelve percent, Gregory," Arthur corrected him, tossing the silver flash drive onto the mahogany table.
"Until you signed an emergency authorization transferring your voting rights to Victoria Sterling’s shell company," Arthur noted.
Gregory’s eyes darted frantically toward the flash drive, his arrogance instantly turning into sickening panic.
"That was a legitimate business hedge, Arthur! The markets were collapsing!" Gregory sputtered.
"You gave Victoria the access codes to Mother's private elevator," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper as he stopped inches from his cousin.
"You disabled the panic buttons in her private suite," Arthur continued.
"And you instructed Victoria to use physical force if Mother refused to sign the power of attorney," the billionaire accused.
"You have no proof of that!" Gregory snarled, spitting onto the polished marble floor.
Arthur pulled out his personal phone and tapped the screen once.
A crisp, uncompressed audio recording filled the grand foyer, broadcasting Gregory’s distinct aristocratic voice:
"Just take a bat to her knees, Victoria. She's seventy-five and brittle as dry twigs; one crack and she will sign whatever you put in front of her."
The federal agents tightened their grip on Gregory's arms, forcing the man down until his forehead struck the hard wood of the table.
Gregory let out a pathetic wail, his resistance evaporating into pure cowardice.
"Arthur... we are blood! You can't send your own cousin to a federal penitentiary!" Gregory sobbed against the wood.
"We share blood, Gregory," Arthur said coldly, looking down at the groveling man without an ounce of pity.
"But Clara Jenkins shares our honor," Arthur added, turning to look at the young maid.
"Take him away," Arthur ordered the agents.
"Ensure he is placed in the maximum-security wing of the metropolitan detention complex," he instructed.
"No bail, no visitors, and no access to family trust funds," Arthur commanded.
As the agents dragged the screaming traitor toward the heavy front doors, the grand foyer finally fell into silence.
Arthur turned toward Clara, his eyes taking in the bloodstains on her cuffs and the unflinching courage in her stance.
"You saved my mother's life, Clara," Arthur said, stepping closer.
"And in doing so, you saved everything this family has built over three generations," he acknowledged.
Clara lowered her eyes modestly, though her posture remained as proud as a queen's.
"I only did what my father raised me to do, Mr. Vance," Clara replied.
"Your father was a hero," Arthur said, his voice softening with deep emotion.
"And it is time his daughter was recognized as one," the billionaire proclaimed.
"Starting tomorrow, you are no longer an employee of this estate," Arthur stated.
Clara looked up, a flicker of surprise crossing her composed face.
"Sir?" she whispered, uncertain of what his words meant.
Arthur extended his right hand toward her, an offer of absolute equality.
"Starting tomorrow, Clara, you are the Director of Global Security for the Vance Corporation," Arthur declared.
"You will carry my personal authority, you will answer only to me, and you will clean this empire of every snake that remains," he vowed.
Clara looked at his outstretched hand, then took it in a firm, unbreakable grip.

"I accept, Mr. Vance," Clara said clearly.
Neither of them knew that outside in the dark shadows of the long driveway, a black luxury sedan sat watching the manor with its headlights off.
