Chapter 12 - The Council's Shadow

The unmarked black gunship spiraled out of the Bavarian sky, trailing a ribbon of black smoke before disintegrating against the limestone peaks below.
Briggs lowered the shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile launcher on the rooftop helipad, wiping sleet from his scarred face.
"Target neutralized, sir," Briggs reported through the radio channel, his breathing steady despite the firefight.
Inside the destroyed command deck, Arthur retrieved a black leather briefcase from beneath Julian’s secret compartment in the floorboards.
Within the case lay twelve physical identity tokens forged from solid platinum, each bearing an ancient sovereign crest and an encrypted biometric chip.
Clara bound Julian's wrists with high-tensile steel zip ties, checking the traitor's pulse with professional detachment.
"He will survive long enough to face a military tribunal," Clara said, wiping blood from her cheek with the back of her sleeve.
Julian groaned as he regained consciousness, his eyes blinking through the haze of concussive shock.
"You think... you think you can touch the Twelve in Geneva?" Julian slurred, coughing violently against the cold air.
"They own the Swiss banking regulators, the international courts, and the private armies guarding Lake Geneva," Julian warned.
"They do not own me," Arthur said, taking the platinum tokens and slipping them into his heavy coat.
Arthur pulled his secure satellite phone from his pocket, dialing an encrypted frequency that bypassed all civilian communications satellites.
The call connected on the second ring, and the calm, refined voice of Lady Evelyn Vance came through the speaker.
"Arthur, my son," Evelyn said, her voice clear and untrembling despite the early morning hour in New York.
"Mother, Julian is broken and the mountain compound is ours," Arthur reported, looking down at his captured uncle.
"And the global cyber assault?" Evelyn asked, the concern of an empire's matriarch vibrating beneath her words.
"Neutralized with two seconds to spare thanks to Thomas Jenkins’ tactical foresight and Clara's courage," Arthur answered.
On the other end of the line, Clara could hear the matriarch let out a long, shuddering sigh of profound relief.
"Put Clara on the line, Arthur," Evelyn commanded gently.
Arthur handed the satellite handset to Clara, whose stoic facade softened for the briefest instant.
"I am here, Lady Evelyn," Clara said, standing straight as if reporting for duty in the manor library.
"Clara, my darling child," Evelyn spoke, her tone rich with maternal warmth and sovereign authority.
"Twenty-two years ago your father promised me that the Jenkins bloodline would stand as an unbreakable shield before this family," Evelyn said.
"He fulfilled that vow with his dying breath, and today you have honored his name above all others," the matriarch proclaimed.
"I merely did what duty demanded, Lady Evelyn," Clara replied quietly.
"No, Clara; you did what honor demanded," Evelyn corrected her firmly.
"Now listen to me very carefully, both of you," Evelyn instructed, her voice dropping into an icy tactical tone.
"The Council of Twelve is led by a man named Victor Sterling," Evelyn revealed, dropping a bombshell that echoed through the room.
Arthur's jaw clenched with such force that the tendons in his neck flared like steel cables.
"Victoria's father," Arthur said, his voice dropping into absolute zero.
"Yes," Evelyn confirmed from across the Atlantic.
"Victor faked his disappearance into an offshore trust three years ago to assume the seat of the Supreme Architect," Evelyn explained.
"Victoria’s assault on me with that baseball bat was not a reckless crime of passion; it was a coordinated coup to seize the Vance voting shares before this morning's strike," Evelyn stated.
"She was following her father's direct orders from Geneva," Clara concluded, piecing together the web of betrayal with razor-sharp clarity.
"Exactly," Evelyn said.
"Victor Sterling sits in the Palais de Justice on the private shores of Lake Geneva tonight," the matriarch revealed.
"He has summoned the remaining eleven shadow lords to ratify the liquidation of all Vance sovereign assets," she added.
"He will sign his own death warrant instead," Arthur declared, taking the phone back from Clara.
"Mother, instruct the federal marshals to move Victoria Sterling into solitary confinement under maximum treason watch," Arthur ordered.
"Ensure she has a live video feed to Geneva; I want her to watch her father’s empire burn from her cell," Arthur instructed.
"It shall be done, my son," Evelyn replied.
"Go to Switzerland, reclaim our sovereign birthright, and show the world what happens to those who dare touch this house," Evelyn concluded before disconnecting.
Arthur turned toward Julian, who was trembling violently on the floor, the truth of his expendability finally breaking his spirit.
"Victor Sterling used you as live bait, Julian," Arthur said, looking down at his uncle with cold pity.
"He gave you the deeds to the Caspian pipelines knowing full well that they were poisoned with backdoors to draw my fire," Arthur stated.
Julian looked up, his eyes widening in horror as the tactical reality washed over him.
"No... no, Victor swore we would divide the European grid equally..." Julian stammered, his voice breaking into pathetic whimpers.
"You sold your brother, your nephew, and your family honor for a chair that was never yours," Clara spat, stepping toward the exit.
Briggs entered the war room, flanked by two armed operators carrying tactical zip-line harnesses.
"Transport is secured on the lower plateau, Mr. Vance," Briggs reported, saluting crisply.
"Hand Julian over to the German Bundespolizei under special rendition protocols," Arthur instructed Briggs.
"Charge him with high treason, domestic terrorism, and sovereign espionage," Arthur added.
"Let him spend the rest of his miserable life in a windowless cell beneath the Black Forest," Arthur commanded.
Julian began to weep openly, clawing at the floorboards as the operators hauled him up by his bound arms.
"Arthur! Please! I am your blood! I am a Vance!" Julian screamed, his voice echoing down the stone corridor.
"A Vance does not crawl in the mud with traitors," Arthur replied without even looking back.
Arthur and Clara stepped out onto the mountain helipad into the crisp, freezing light of the Bavarian sunrise.
The twin-turbine Vance tactical transport stood idling, its black rotors slicing through the crystalline mountain air.
Clara holstered her father’s weapon, rolling her shoulders to release the crushing tension of the past four hours.
"Next stop, Geneva?" Clara asked, her dark eyes flashing with lethal anticipation.

"Next stop, Geneva," Arthur confirmed, boarding the transport.
"Tonight, the Council of Twelve learns that some dynasties cannot be conquered," Arthur declared as the helicopter lifted into the clouds.
