Chapter 5 - The Shadow Behind the Throne

The morning sun broke over the Vance estate, painting the stone walls in hues of pale amber and gold.

The garden that had seen such violence twenty-four hours earlier was now immaculate, the lawn cleaned and the silver bat sealed away in a police evidence locker.

Inside the private breakfast terrace overlooking the sea, Lady Evelyn sat enjoying fresh fruit, her color fully returned.

Arthur sat opposite her, reviewing digital contracts on his tablet while Clara stood beside them, dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal suit.

She had discarded the maid's uniform forever, stepping naturally into her new role as the guardian of the Vance empire.

"The board of directors met at six this morning, Arthur," Evelyn said, setting down her silver fork with a satisfied smile.

"They voted unanimously to strip Gregory of all titles and liquidate his remaining trust shares," the matriarch reported.

"They had no choice, Mother," Arthur replied without looking up from his screen.

"With Clara’s evidence, any board member who voted otherwise would have faced immediate conspiracy indictments," he noted.

"You did well, child," Evelyn said, reaching out to grasp Clara’s hand with genuine motherly affection.

"Your father Thomas would be weeping with pride if he were here to see you," the old woman said softly.

"Thank you, Lady Evelyn," Clara replied, a rare, warm smile touching her lips.

"Protecting you is the greatest honor of my life," she added.

Before Arthur could speak, the heavy glass doors of the terrace opened, and Briggs stepped through, his face unusually grim.

The seasoned security chief carried a silver salver, upon which rested a single, heavy envelope sealed with black wax.

"Excuse the interruption, Mr. Vance," Briggs said, his voice unusually tense.

Arthur looked up, his brow furrowing at the sight of the black wax.

"What is this, Briggs?" Arthur asked, reaching for the envelope.

"A courier on an unmarked motorcycle dropped it at the main security checkpoint sixty seconds ago," Briggs explained.

"The rider wore full tactical gear with no plates on the bike, and sped away before my men could detain him," the guard reported.

"We ran the envelope through chemical and explosive scanners; it's clean," Briggs confirmed.

"It is addressed to you and Miss Jenkins," the security chief added.

Clara immediately stepped forward, her instincts flaring as she examined the dark wax imprint.

The wax was stamped with an ancient, intricate crest: an owl perched upon an inverted cross.

"Arthur, don't open that," Evelyn whispered, her face suddenly turning as pale as chalk.

Arthur paused, his fingers resting on the thick parchment.

"Mother? Do you recognize this crest?" Arthur asked, alarmed by the sudden terror in her eyes.

Evelyn’s hands began to shake again, worse than when Victoria had raised the bat above her head.

"I haven't seen that seal in thirty years," Evelyn breathed, clutching her chest as if struggling for air.

"I thought he was dead... Arthur, we buried him in the family vault in Munich!" she cried out.

Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs as he tore open the envelope, breaking the black wax with a sharp snap.

Inside were two items: a high-resolution photographic negative and a handwritten letter penned in dried black ink.

Arthur pulled out the letter, his eyes scanning the elegant, terrifying calligraphy.

Clara leaned in close, her sharp eyes reading the words alongside him:

"My dearest Arthur and little Clara," the letter began.

"Did you truly believe that a foolish girl like Victoria and an idiot like Gregory had the brains to dismantle my legacy?" the writer asked.

"Victoria was merely a distraction to test your reflexes, and Clara proved to be as sharp as her father ever was," the letter continued.

"Thomas Jenkins took four bullets for your mother thirty years ago, but he couldn't take the fifth bullet that I personally buried in his lung last autumn," the note claimed.

Clara’s breath hitched, her fists clenching so hard her fingernails bit into her palms.

"My father died of respiratory failure in a private clinic..." Clara whispered, her voice trembling with sudden, agonizing fury.

"Did he?" Arthur muttered, his eyes dropping to the photographic negative.

Arthur held the negative up to the morning sunlight streaming through the terrace glass.

The translucent image inverted into a crystal-clear scene:

A hospital room, an old man hooked to an oxygen monitor, and a towering figure dressed in an immaculate white suit standing over him, pinching the oxygen line shut.

The face of the man in the white suit was unmistakable, sharing the exact high cheekbones and piercing dark eyes of Arthur himself.

"Uncle Julian..." Arthur breathed, his voice dropping into a hollow, dangerous register.

"Julian Vance," Evelyn wept, burying her face in her hands.

"Your father's twin brother... the man who tried to burn our empire to the ground before you were even born," she cried.

The final lines of the letter burned on the paper like molten lead:

"The bat was only the first inning, nephew."

"Victoria was a pawn sacrificed to bring Clara Jenkins out of hiding and into the open."

"Now that the guard dog’s daughter is beside you, the true hunt begins."

"Check your mother's private vault in the basement; you will find it completely empty."

"Welcome to the real war, Arthur."

Arthur crushed the paper in his fist, his expression transforming into something darker and deadlier than anyone had ever seen on him.

He turned to Clara, who stood vibrating with an uncontrollable, lethal resolve.

Her father had not died of natural causes; he had been executed by the true ghost of the Vance dynasty.

"Briggs," Arthur commanded, his voice shaking the morning air with absolute authority.

"Sound the general alarm," the billionaire ordered.

"Prepare the private jet for Munich, mobilize our entire tactical division, and issue an international kill-order on Julian Vance," he commanded.

Clara met Arthur’s furious gaze, her fear completely replaced by an insatiable thirst for retribution.

"I'm coming with you, Arthur," Clara said, her voice dropping into a cold, promise of death.

"I know," Arthur replied, his fingers interlocking with hers as the storm clouds of a global war rolled in over the horizon.
