Chapter 30 - THE RUNWAY IN THE SKY

The ventilation shaft opened onto a sheer cliff face overlooking the abandoned logging airstrip.

Ethan dropped from the rusted exhaust grate into knee-deep snow, landing hard on his feet while shielding Lily against his chest. Daniel and Dr. Chen tumbled out seconds later, sliding down the rocky embankment into the frozen brush.

Two hundred yards across the cracked, weed-choked asphalt runway stood an old corrugated steel hangar.

Parked outside the hangar was an aging, twin-engine Cessna 310, its propellers already spinning, slicing through the freezing mountain mist with a steady, rhythmic thrum. At the controls, a pilot in a leather flight jacket was frantically waving them forward through the cockpit window.

"The plane!" Chen gasped, clutching his side as he struggled through the deep snow drifts. "Torres is ready!"

Behind them, the deep bowels of Blair Mountain groaned.

A sound like rolling thunder vibrated through the earth beneath their boots. Then, the entire summit of the mountain erupted.

A towering pillar of superheated steam, fire, and shattered rock blasted into the night sky, illuminating the entire valley in blinding, hellish orange light. The underground laboratory was completely pulverized, collapsed beneath millions of tons of granite. The shockwave swept down the slope, snapping pine trees like toothpicks and throwing Ethan to his knees in the snow.

Ethan scrambled back up, his lungs burning with freezing air, his eyes locked on the runway.

"Keep moving!" Daniel screamed, grabbing Ethan’s arm and hauling him forward. "To the plane!"

They burst out of the tree line and onto the cracked asphalt of the runway, sprinting toward the idling aircraft.

Fifty yards from the plane.

Thirty yards.

Suddenly, a deafening mechanical roar descended from the clouds above them.

A sleek, matte-black military attack helicopter dropped out of the burning sky like an obsidian raptor, hovering barely thirty feet above the tarmac directly between the Mercer family and the Cessna.

The hurricane of rotor wash blasted snow, ice, and gravel into their faces, nearly knocking them off their feet.

The helicopter’s side door slid open.

Mounted in the doorway was a heavy, belt-fed machine gun.

Standing behind the weapon, secured by a safety harness, was Julian Sterling.

His cashmere coat was gone, replaced by a black flight jacket. His face was bathed in the harsh green light of the helicopter’s instrument panel, his expression completely calm, completely detached, like an executioner checking his watch.

Beside him, clutching the door frame, was Vanessa Vance. Her face was twisted with manic, unhinged triumph.

"Did you really think it would end on an airplane, Daniel?" Sterling’s voice cut through the roar of the helicopter blades, projected through the aircraft’s external loudspeaker. "Sarah was brilliant. Truly brilliant. But she forgot the most fundamental rule of our world: capital always outlasts courage."

Sterling raised his hand. The mercenary behind the heavy machine gun racked the bolt, the heavy steel round sliding into the chamber with a sound that resonated above the howling wind.

"Throw the backpack to Vanessa," Sterling commanded. "And I might let the boy live long enough to bury the two of you."

Daniel stepped forward, directly into the blinding beam of the helicopter’s searchlight, placing his body squarely between the machine gun and his children.

"Take the cure, Sterling," Daniel yelled into the storm. "Take the patents. Take everything Sarah built. Just let my kids board that plane."

Sterling smiled—that same cold, dead smile from the front porch. "You misunderstand me, Daniel. I don't negotiate with dead men."

Sterling dropped his hand.

*CLACK.*

The mercenary’s finger tightened on the trigger.

Suddenly, from the cockpit of the Cessna thirty yards away, a flare gun fired.

A brilliant, burning ball of magnesium red fire rocketed across the tarmac, striking the helicopter’s open side door directly in the ammunition feed tray of the machine gun.

*BOOM!*

The flare ignited the loose rounds in the feed tray, a blinding secondary explosion ripping through the door frame of the helicopter. The gunner screamed, falling backward into the cabin, while the helicopter lurched violently to the left as the pilot fought the controls against the sudden blast.

"RUN!" Daniel roared, grabbing Lily from Ethan and sprinting toward the Cessna’s open boarding ladder.

Ethan followed, his boots pounding against the frozen runway.

They reached the plane just as the helicopter regained stability, spinning around in mid-air, its nose cannons rotating to lock directly onto the Cessna’s fuel tanks.

Captain Torres shoved the throttles forward. The twin engines roared to maximum power, the Cessna lunging forward down the runway, picking up speed as bullets began to chew through the fuselage.

Ethan pulled the heavy passenger door shut, locking the latches just as a round punched through the window above his head.

The Cessna lifted off the tarmac, climbing steeply into the burning, smoke-filled mountain sky.

Inside the cabin, Daniel collapsed into a seat, clutching Lily to his chest. Ethan fell to his knees in the aisle, gasping for air, clutching the black Pelican case to his chest.

They had made it. They were in the air.

Ethan looked out the cracked rear window as the burning silhouette of Blair Mountain shrank below them.

Then, his heart stopped.

Sitting in the jump seat across from him—her hands wrapped around a silent, suppressed pistol leveled directly between Ethan’s eyes—was Vanessa Vance.

She had caught the landing gear strut during the chaos on the runway. She had slipped into the unpressurized rear baggage compartment before the door was sealed.

Her clothes were torn, her face blackened with soot, and her lips were pulled back over her teeth in a feral, psychotic grin.

"Surprise, family," Vanessa whispered, her finger taking up the slack on the trigger.

Outside the cockpit windshield, the pilot screamed: *"MAYDAY! MAYDAY! WE HAVE IN-FLIGHT SYSTEM FAILURE! THE ENGINES ARE CUTTING OUT!"*

The Cessna shuddered violently, rolling into a steep, uncontrollable dive toward the black abyss of the Atlantic Ocean below...
