Chapter 29 - THE SIEGE OF BLAIR MOUNTAIN

The concrete walls of the underground laboratory trembled as the first exploratory charge detonated against the exterior rock face. Dust rained down from the ceiling, coating the monitors and stainless-steel tables in a fine white powder.

"Thermite breach charges," Dr. Chen said, his face pale as paper. "They aren't trying to blast through the door. They’re burning through the structural support pillars of the cavern ceiling. If they drop the rock roof, this entire facility becomes our tomb."

Daniel checked the shotgun’s action, then picked up two semi-automatic tactical rifles Chen had pulled from an emergency weapons locker. "How many exits does this bunker have, Chen?"

"Two," Chen answered quickly, his fingers flying across the master console. "The main blast door they are currently attacking, and an old mining ventilation shaft that surfaces half a mile north, on the edge of the abandoned logging airstrip."

"The airstrip where your transport plane is waiting?" Ethan asked, securing the Pelican case inside a tactical backpack.

"Yes," Chen said. "My contact, Captain Torres, has an old twin-engine Cessna idling in the hangar. If we can reach that runway, we can take off before Sterling’s mercenary team realizes we’ve escaped the mountain."

"They have thermal sensors, Doctor," Ethan pointed out, staring at the surveillance monitors. "The moment we pop out of that ventilation shaft, their drones will spot our body heat."

Chen’s eyes flickered with a dark, grim resolve. "Not if there is a massive thermal distraction right here."

Daniel stared at the old scientist. "What are you talking about?"

Chen walked over to the primary containment unit behind the central server array. He pulled a yellow safety glass cover and exposed a heavy mechanical lever marked: *EMERGENCY GEOTHERMAL VENTING: PURGE SYSTEM.*

"This facility sits directly above an active geothermal fissure," Chen said quietly. "If I vent the primary cooling lines into the server stacks, the resulting superheated steam and electrical fire will register on their sensors like an atomic detonation. Every thermal camera in the county will be blinded for twenty minutes."

"You have to manually vent it," Daniel realized, his voice dropping. "It can't be triggered remotely."

"No," Chen said softly. "Someone has to stay at the manual pressure release valve in the lower turbine room."

Daniel stepped forward, reaching for the lever. "I'll do it. Ethan, take Lily and Chen. Get to the plane."

"No, Dad!" Ethan grabbed Daniel’s arm, his grip fierce, unyielding. "You are not dying here! Mom didn't die so you could commit suicide in a cave! Lily needs her father! I need my father!"

Daniel looked down at Ethan, his eyes burning with tears, but his face set with an absolute, unbreakable love. "Ethan... for four years, I let that monster Vanessa destroy our family because I was too weak, too blind, too broken to see the truth. You carried this family. You protected Lily. You uncovered the secret. Now it’s my turn to be your father."

"Dad, NO!" Ethan yelled.

*BOOM!*

A catastrophic explosion rocked the bunker.

The reinforced steel blast door at the end of the entry corridor bulged inward, the edges glowing cherry red as military thermite chewed through the hinges.

"They're through the outer seal!" Chen shouted over the wailing sirens. "We have ninety seconds!"

Daniel looked at Dr. Chen. "Can the manual vent be rigged with a time delay?"

Chen hesitated. "A mechanical counterweight on the release valve. It could buy five minutes before the pressure hits critical. But it’s unstable. It could blow in two minutes, or ten."

"Rig the counterweight," Daniel commanded, grabbing Chen by the shoulder. "We all leave together, or none of us leave. Move!"

Chen sprinted toward the lower turbine room.

Ethan scooped Lily up into his arms, wrapping her tightly in his jacket. Her eyes fluttered open, drowsy from the sedative. "Ethan... where are we going?"

"We're going to fly, Lily," Ethan whispered against her hair. "We’re going to fly away."

In the entry corridor, the blast door gave way with a deafening screech of tearing metal.

Smoke, fire, and tear gas poured into the main laboratory.

Through the haze, figures in black tactical armor moved forward, weapons raised. Vanessa Vance strode through the shattered entryway, her eyes gleeful, her submachine gun sweeping across the empty room.

"Mercer!" Vanessa’s voice echoed off the granite walls. "Come out, come out, little rats! Mr. Sterling is running out of patience!"

From the lower catwalk, Daniel stepped into view, leveling his rifle.

"Vanessa!" Daniel roared.

Vanessa whipped around, her eyes widening in shock.

Daniel pulled the trigger.

A hail of high-caliber rounds tore into the catwalk support beams directly beneath Vanessa’s mercenaries, sending two men tumbling into the industrial coolant vats below.

"Down the vent shaft! NOW!" Daniel shouted toward the rear corridor where Ethan was holding the hatch open.

Chen scrambled up the metal ladder from the turbine room, coughing violently. "The counterweight is set! Four minutes until thermal detonation! RUN!"

Ethan, Chen, and Daniel dove into the narrow, dark metal ventilation tunnel just as Julian Sterling stepped into the shattered laboratory.

Sterling didn't panic. He looked at the bubbling coolant vats, looked at the rumbling turbine pressure gauges climbing into the red zone, and his pale eyes narrowed into slits of ice.

"They rigged the geothermal core," Sterling said coldly to Vanessa. "Pull the team out. Seal the mountain."

Vanessa looked at him, confused. "What about the girl? What about the Master Key?"

Sterling leveled a frigid, merciless gaze at her. "The girl is dead the moment this mountain collapses. We don't need the antidote if there is no evidence left to prove the pathogen exists. Move, Vance. That is an order."
