Chapter 25 - THE CONFRONTATION AT MILLER’S CREEK

The crimson dot of the laser sight didn't waiver. It drifted from the concrete floor, climbed Ethan’s work boots, and settled squarely against the center of his chest.

Ethan didn't drop the diesel cans immediately. He let them pull at his arms, grounding him against the rising tide of pure fury that threatened to drown his reason.

"Sterling broke you out," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a flat, steady register. "Why? He told us this morning you were a liability. An 'untidy' employee he was happy to see eliminated."

Vanessa’s smirk wavered, just for a fraction of a second, before her jaw hardened into stone. "Julian says many things to disarm his targets. He knows what I’m worth. I spent three years playing the doting, miserable suburban stepmother to your pathetic father, all to keep your mother’s research contained. You think you’re smart, Ethan? You’re a teenage boy playing with grown-up artillery. You don't have the stomach for what comes next."

"Where’s Helena?" Ethan asked, deliberately stalling, his ears straining for the sound of Daniel’s footsteps outside.

"Helena was weak," Vanessa scoffed coldly. "She broke under state interrogation within forty minutes. She's currently in an isolation cell at Elmira, awaiting charges that will keep her behind bars until she’s eighty. But I don't go to prison, Ethan. I get paid. Twenty million dollars into a Panamanian trust once I deliver the Pelican case and your little sister's blood sample."

*Lily’s blood sample.*

The revelation struck Ethan like a physical blow. The blue vials weren't just synthetic formulas; they were biological keys designed to synthesize with specific genetic sequences. Sarah hadn't just created an antidote—she had encoded the genetic delivery mechanism to match her daughter’s DNA to prevent Sterling from weaponizing it.

"You touch Lily," Ethan said, his voice barely above a whisper, "and I swear to God I will bury you in this quarry."

"With what, sweetie?" Vanessa raised the submachine gun with one hand, her other hand tapping the railing of the catwalk. "You have five seconds to walk out to that car and bring me the case. One... two—"

*BANG!*

A gunshot echoed not from inside the shed, but from the darkness behind the rusted silos.

A high-powered hunting round tore through the corrugated metal roof directly above Vanessa’s head, showering her with sparks and rusted steel shavings. Vanessa shrieked, ducking instinctively behind the steel I-beam of the catwalk.

"Ethan, RUN!" Daniel’s roar echoed from outside.

Ethan dropped the diesel cans, drew the suppressed pistol from his jacket, and fired three rapid rounds up toward the catwalk. The suppressed *pht-pht-pht* tore into the metal platform, driving Vanessa further into cover.

Ethan turned on his heel and sprinted through the maintenance doors into the open gravel yard.

Outside, Daniel was kneeling behind the Volvo’s front tire, the Remington twelve-gauge leveled at the catwalk windows. "Get in! Get in now!"

"Dad, we need the fuel!" Ethan yelled, diving into the driver’s seat.

"No time! She’s not alone!" Daniel scrambled into the passenger side, slamming the door.

Across the gravel expanse, two sets of headlights flared into existence behind the quarry crushers. Two black heavy-duty SUVs surged forward, spraying stone and dust into the night sky, barreling directly toward the Volvo.

Ethan turned the key. The Volvo’s starter clicked once. Twice. Then the engine caught with a violent cough.

Ethan shoved the transmission into reverse, flooring the pedal. The car rocketed backward just as a volley of automatic gunfire chewed through the dirt where they had been parked seconds earlier. Glass from the remaining side windows exploded inward, raining crystalline shards over Ethan’s lap.

In the back, Lily was curled into a tiny ball beneath the heavy wool blanket, her hands pressed tightly over her ears, tears streaming silently down her cheeks.

Ethan spun the wheel, shifting into drive, and aimed the Volvo straight for the quarry’s heavy iron exit gates.

"Hang on!" Ethan screamed.

The Volvo struck the rusted chain-link and iron gates at forty-five miles per hour. The metal groaned, snapped, and peeled open like tinfoil as the station wagon burst through, hurtling onto State Route 9 in a shower of sparks and shredded fencing.

Behind them, the two black SUVs cleared the gates without losing speed, their high-intensity searchlights locking onto the Volvo’s bumper.

And high up on the catwalk of the maintenance shed, Vanessa Vance watched them flee, pressing a satellite radio communicator to her ear.

"They're on Route 9 heading north toward the Adirondacks," she spoke calmly, wiping blood from a minor scrape on her temple. "Activate the roadblock at mile marker forty-two. And Julian? Don't leave Daniel alive. I want to watch the look on his face when he realizes he was never in control."
