Chapter 18 - THE PURSUIT THROUGH DEVIL’S RAVINE

The state police helicopter circled overhead, its high-powered spotlight cutting white cones through the dense, tangled canopy of Devil’s Ravine. But the terrain behind the Mercer property was notoriously treacherous—a labyrinth of steep limestone drop-offs, muddy creek beds, and overgrown briars that local hunters avoided after dark.

Ethan stood on the edge of the patio, washing the blood from his forearms with a bottle of saline handed to him by a paramedic.

"They lost her heat signature near the old railway culvert," Detective Miller said, walking up with a heavy tactical flashlight. "The tree canopy is too thick for thermal imaging. We’ve set up road blocks on Route 9, but if she reaches the state line before dawn, she has access to private airstrips we can’t freeze without federal warrants."

"She won't take the road," Ethan said, his voice flat, his gaze locked on the dark ravine.

Daniel came out of the house, his arm wrapped securely around Lily, who was wrapped in a thick wool blanket. "Ethan, let the police handle it. We have Vanessa. We have the files. Marcus Vance already submitted the emergency indictment to the federal grand jury."

"You don't understand, Dad," Ethan said, pulling out the index card he had pocketed from the kitchen floor and handing it to Detective Miller. "Helena didn't come here just to get the files. Look at the date."

Miller shone his flashlight on the card. His eyes widened. "She hired an extraction team. Look at these coordinates at the bottom."

"Those coordinates aren't Route 9," Ethan whispered, his pulse spiking again. "Those are the old quarry grounds behind Sarah’s family cabin. Five miles through the woods."

Daniel looked horrified. "Sarah’s cabin? Why would she go there?"

"Because that’s where the server backup is," Ethan realized with sickening clarity. "Mom didn't just keep physical files in the floorboards. She was a systems architect before she started painting! She told me when I was ten years old: *‘If the house ever loses its memory, the mountain remembers.’*"

Helena knew. Vanessa must have pried that detail from Sarah years ago, or uncovered it in old emails. Helena was heading to the cabin to burn the digital servers before the FBI could seize them. If those servers burned, the physical paper files in the box could be dismissed by high-priced corporate defense lawyers as fabricated or contaminated.

Without waiting for permission from the officers, Ethan sprinted toward the garage, throwing his leg over his off-road dirt bike—the one he had spent the summer rebuilding.

"ETHAN! NO!" Daniel shouted, running forward. "WAIT FOR BACKUP!"

"If she burns that cabin, Mom never gets justice!" Ethan yelled, kicking the starter. The two-stroke engine roared to life with a deafening, smoky scream. "Follow the fire road! I'll cut her off at the gorge!"

Ethan twisted the throttle, spraying gravel and mud across the driveway as the bike leaped down the embankment and plunged headfirst into the pitch-black woods.
