Chapter 19 - THE CABIN IN THE MIST

The trail was brutal. Branches whipped across Ethan’s helmet visor like stinging switches as the knobby tires chewed through mud, wet roots, and slick shale. The dirt bike’s single halogen headlight bounced violently against the towering trunks of ancient hemlocks.

Every nerve in Ethan’s body was screaming. He knew these woods; he had hiked them with his mother when he was just a boy, holding her warm hand while she pointed out hawk nests and wild blackberries. The thought of Helena Vance’s poisoned boots trampling over those sacred memories filled him with an incandescent, blinding rage.

Five miles of treacherous mountain path flew by in a blur of roaring exhaust and flying shale.

As Ethan crested the ridge overlooking the small clearing, the silhouette of Sarah’s cedar cabin appeared through the swirling ground mist.

A heavy diesel SUV was idling near the porch, its headlights turned off.

And from the cabin’s living room window, a flickering orange glow began to dance against the glass.

*Smoke.*

Helena had already broken in. She was torching the interior.

Ethan cut the engine fifty yards back, letting the bike slide silently into a thicket of mountain laurel. He dismounted, pulling the heavy tactical wrench from his tool bag, and sprinted through the damp grass toward the cabin porch.

The front door was kicked off its frame. The smell of gasoline was suffocating.

Inside, Helena Vance stood in front of the stone hearth, holding a lit road flare. At her feet, the access panel beneath the bookshelf had been pried open, exposing the steel casing of the backup server array Sarah had built into the structural foundation.

"Stop!" Ethan yelled, stepping into the doorway, wrench raised.

Helena turned slowly. Her expensive trench coat was torn, smeared with black creek mud, her face scratched by briars. But her eyes remained utterly, terrifyingly calm.

"You really are your mother's son," Helena said softly, holding the sputtering red flare inches above a pool of dark gasoline pooling around the server rack. "Stubborn. Righteous. Completely blind to how the world actually functions."

"Drop the flare, Helena," Ethan ordered, his voice echoing in the smoky room. "The woods are surrounded. Helicopters are five minutes out. There is no airstrip. There is no escape."

"I don't need an escape, Ethan," Helena said, her lips curving into a monstrous, sickening smile. "I have six subsidiaries in three countries. Even if I spend five years in a federal medical facility, my wealth outlives your entire generation. But your family? Your pathetic little sister? Without this evidence, Daniel goes to prison for corporate industrial espionage. We filed the countersuit an hour ago."

"What are you talking about?" Ethan’s stomach plummeted.

"Vanessa wasn't just your stepmother. She was listed as Daniel’s corporate business partner," Helena laughed, a dry, rattling sound. "The moment she walks into court, she testifies that Daniel murdered Sarah to steal the patents, and framed Vanessa to cover his tracks. Who do you think a jury believes? A grieving stepmother with an ankle monitor, or the man who inherited four hundred million dollars in intellectual property?"

Ethan’s breath hitched. They had planned this from the very beginning. Every cruelty, every move, every trap was layered beneath layers of corporate deceit.

"Now," Helena whispered, lowering the hissing red flare toward the gasoline. "Watch your mother's legacy turn to ash."
