Chapter 20 - THE BURNING THRESHOLD

Ethan didn't think. He didn't calculate the odds. He launched his entire body across the ten feet of open floor, tackling Helena Vance by the waist just as the flare touched the edge of the gasoline pool.

*WHOOSH!*

A wall of yellow and orange fire erupted along the baseline of the wall, heat blasting across Ethan’s face with scorching force. The impact sent both of them crashing into the stone hearth. The flare rolled away, sizzling against the concrete floor.

Helena fought with a feral, terrifying strength that belied her age. She gouged her fingernails into Ethan’s cheek, kicking and clawing, reaching for a heavy cast-iron fire dog beside the fireplace.

"You die here, you little parasite!" she shrieked, swinging the iron bar toward Ethan’s skull.

Ethan blocked the strike with his forearm, the heavy metal bruising his bone with excruciating agony. Gritting his teeth through the pain, he twisted her arm back and pinned her against the stone floor, knocking the iron weapon from her grip.

"It's over!" Ethan roared over the crackling roar of the flames spreading across the cedar walls. "It's over!"

The cabin was filling with thick, blinding smoke. The heat was becoming unbearable, the dry timber of the ceiling catching fire with explosive speed. Beams groaned overhead as the fire chewed through the rafters.

Ethan grabbed the heavy steel server unit with his burned, bleeding hands, ripping it free from the mounting brackets with a scream of pure adrenaline. He hauled Helena up by her collar, dragging both the heavy server and the struggling woman toward the front door.

"Let me go!" Helena screamed, choking on the black smoke. "The files! The backup drive is still in the wall safe!"

"Leave it!" Ethan coughed, kicking the burning door frame out into the yard.

They tumbled down the wooden porch steps just as the entire roof of the cabin collapsed inward with a deafening roar of sparks and crashing timber, sending a pillar of orange flame fifty feet into the night sky.

Ethan lay on the wet grass, coughing violently, clutching the heavy server unit to his chest.

In the distance, the wailing sirens of state police cruisers finally broke through the tree line, tires screeching onto the gravel clearing. High-powered spotlights washed over the clearing, illuminating Helena Vance pinned against the dirt, coughing, defeated, her empire burning behind her.

Detective Miller and Daniel sprinted from the lead cruiser toward Ethan.

"Ethan! Oh God, Ethan!" Daniel fell to his knees, pulling Ethan up from the grass, checking his burns, his face streaked with tears of pure relief. "You got it. You’re alive. You got it."

Ethan looked down at the server unit in his arms, then over at Helena Vance being forced into the back of a state cruiser in double-locked steel handcuffs.

It was finally done. The evidence was secured. Vanessa was in custody. Helena was destroyed.

Three hours later, the sun rose over their home on Maple Street.

The house was quiet. Daniel was in the kitchen brewing tea, his hands steady for the first time in four years. Lily was sitting on the living room rug, coloring a picture of Sarah’s garden, humming a soft tune. Ethan sat on the front porch steps, his bandaged hands resting on his knees, watching the neighborhood wake up in peaceful, golden light.

For the first time since that terrible birthday party, the air felt clean.

Then, the landline phone in the kitchen rang.

Daniel answered it on the second ring. "Hello?"

Ethan heard Daniel’s voice suddenly cut off. Not a gasp. Not a word. Just a dead, suffocating silence.

Ethan stood up from the porch, stepping slowly into the house. "Dad? Who is it?"

Daniel was standing frozen in the middle of the kitchen, the receiver shaking violently against his ear. His eyes were wide, vacant, staring at the floorboards like a man who had just seen a ghost walk through the wall.

Slowly, Daniel turned the receiver toward Ethan, hitting the speakerphone button with a trembling finger.

Through the tinny speaker, a smooth, deep, unfamiliar voice spoke with chilling precision:

*"Good morning, Daniel. You did an exceptional job eliminating my former associates, Helena and Vanessa. They were becoming... untidy."*

Ethan froze.

*"The four hundred million in patents is now consolidated under our offshore branch,"* the voice continued, smooth as polished ice. *"Sarah thought she only had two enemies. She was wrong. Tell Ethan to check the silver locket around Lily’s neck. We activated the tracker twenty minutes ago. Don't leave the house, Mercer family. We are pulling into your driveway right now."*

Outside, through the frosted glass of the front door, the heavy, rhythmic tap of knuckles echoed once again against the wood.
