Chapter 8

I called Daniel until my fingers hurt.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Again.
Straight to voicemail.
Marcus contacted police while Julia called Daniel’s attorney.
Rachel was sobbing on the other line.
“I’m so sorry. The school called and said Daniel had picked him up. I thought you knew.”
“This isn’t your fault.”
My voice did not sound like mine.
“Did Ethan say anything?”
“He was worried. He asked why you didn’t come.”
My chest ripped open.
“Did he get into Daniel’s car willingly?”
“Yes.”
That mattered.
At least Ethan had not been dragged away by a stranger.
But Daniel had used forged guardianship documents.
Nothing about that was safe.
The principal sent Marcus the paperwork.
The signature authorizing temporary guardianship looked like mine.
It was not.
Julia stared at it.
“This may be one of the forged documents Vanessa mentioned.”
William called Daniel.
No answer.
Lauren tried.
Nothing.
Then Margaret walked out of the courthouse.
I ran toward her.
Marcus grabbed my arm before I reached her.
“Where is Ethan?”
Margaret looked almost amused.
“I have no idea.”
“Daniel took him.”
“That sounds like a matter between you and your husband.”
“He used forged paperwork.”
Her smile disappeared for half a second.
Enough.
“You knew.”
“I know nothing.”
William stepped closer.
“Margaret.”
She looked at him.
“If Ethan is harmed, there is nowhere you can go that I will not use every legal resource I have to find the truth.”
Her expression sharpened.
“Threatening me now?”
“Promising you.”
She walked away.
Police issued an alert for Daniel’s vehicle after Marcus explained Daniel lacked legal guardianship authority.
Technically, the situation was complicated because Daniel had acted as Ethan’s parent for years.
Emotionally, it was simple.
My son was gone.
An hour passed.
Then two.
I sat in William’s apartment clutching Ethan’s sweatshirt because it still smelled like his shampoo.
My phone rang at 2:17.
Daniel.
I answered so quickly I almost dropped it.
“Where is he?”
“Emily, calm down.”
“Put Ethan on the phone.”
“He’s fine.”
“Put him on.”
“We need to talk first.”
Every part of me went cold.
“You took my child to force me to talk?”
“I picked up my son.”
“He is not legally your son.”
Daniel inhaled sharply.
“You know what I mean.”
“No. I don’t.”
“I have raised him for four years.”
“And today you used forged documents to take him from school.”
“Mom gave me those forms months ago. She said you signed them.”
I looked at Marcus.
He was recording notes.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere private.”
“Put Ethan on.”
“Agree to meet me.”
“No.”
“Emily.”
“Daniel, if you love him, put him on the phone.”
Silence.
Then I heard movement.
A small voice.
“Mom?”
I broke.
“Ethan.”
“Are you mad?”
“No, baby. No.”
“Dad said you forgot to tell me he was picking me up.”
I closed my eyes.
“I didn’t forget.”
Daniel said something I couldn’t hear.
Ethan whispered, “Are you coming?”
“Yes.”
I looked at Marcus.
He shook his head, warning me not to promise what we could not control.
I continued anyway.
“I am coming to get you.”
“Okay.”
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
There was a pause.
“Dad said I’m not supposed to say.”
My stomach turned.
“Ethan, listen carefully. You are not in trouble. Can you look around and tell me something you see?”
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“Enough.”
“Where are you?”
“If you want Ethan, meet me alone.”
Marcus mouthed, No.
“What do you want?”
“I want you to stop helping Dad.”
I could barely believe him.
“That’s what this is?”
“You don’t understand what he’s doing.”
“You took a child.”
“I took my family.”
“No.”
My voice shook with rage.
“You took a frightened seven-year-old from school because you want leverage.”
“I am trying to fix our marriage.”
“This ended our marriage.”
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered, “Don’t say that.”
“You ended it.”
“I made mistakes.”
“You are making one right now.”
“I need the trust frozen.”
There it was.
Not love.
Money.
“You want me to reject the trust.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Mom says if Dad completes the transfers, we’ll never get the company back.”
“We?”
“My family.”
“Ethan is supposed to be your family.”
“He is.”
“Then bring him home.”
Daniel breathed heavily.
“I need your promise.”
“No.”
“If you don’t cooperate—”
“What?”
I stood.
“What are you going to do to him?”
“Nothing!”
His voice broke.
“I would never hurt him.”
“Then stop using him.”
Daniel became silent.
I heard Ethan crying faintly in the background.
That sound changed everything.
Even Daniel heard it.
“Ethan?” he called.
My son said, “I want Mom.”
Daniel did not answer him.
I whispered, “Listen to him.”
More crying.
“I want Mom.”
Daniel cursed under his breath.
Then he said to me, “There’s an old playground near Lake Mercer.”
William immediately looked up.
He knew it.
“Come alone.”
The call ended.
Police advised me not to go alone.
I agreed.
Then I went anyway.
Not truly alone.
Officers stayed back.
Marcus followed separately.
William wanted to come, but Julia stopped him.
I reached the playground twenty-eight minutes later.
Daniel’s car was parked beside an empty soccer field.
Ethan sat on a swing.
Daniel stood behind him.
My son saw me first.
“Mom!”
He ran.
I opened my arms.
He slammed into me so hard I nearly fell.
“I knew you’d come.”
I held him against my chest.
“I’m here.”
Daniel remained near the swings.
He looked wrecked.
“This didn’t have to happen.”
I stared at him.
“You’re right.”
He flinched.
“You could have brought him back.”
“I needed you to listen.”
“No. You needed control.”
Police cars entered the parking lot.
Daniel’s face changed.
“You called them?”
“You forged my signature.”
“I didn’t forge it.”
“You used it.”
“I thought it was real.”
“Then tell that to them.”
Ethan clung to me.
Daniel took one step forward.
Officers approached.
“Sir, stay where you are.”
Daniel stopped.
He looked at Ethan.
“Buddy, I’m sorry.”
Ethan buried his face against me.
Daniel’s eyes filled.
That should have been the worst moment.
It wasn’t.
As an officer searched Daniel before placing him in the patrol car, he found a second phone in Daniel’s jacket.
Later, investigators opened it with a warrant.
Inside were hundreds of messages with Margaret.
One message had been sent that morning.
Margaret had written:
Take Ethan before Emily gets to him. Once she signs away the trust, bring the boy back.
Daniel had replied:
What if she refuses?
May you like
Margaret’s answer was six words.
Then she loses more than money.
