Chapter 6

I could not speak.

Julia took over.

“What kind of documents?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Consulting agreements. Emails. A draft trust proposal dated six months ago.”

I shook my head.

“I never drafted a trust.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because I helped Daniel create the fake paperwork.”

The room went silent.

William stared at the phone.

Julia’s expression turned hard.

“Ms. Cole, you understand what you just admitted?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I said I can’t tell you.”

“If you want protection, running makes this worse.”

“I’m not asking for protection.”

“Then why call?”

Vanessa’s answer came quietly.

“Because I didn’t know there was a child involved.”

I looked at Ethan.

He was in the bedroom with headphones now, watching a movie.

“What does that mean?”

“Daniel told me you were greedy.”

I laughed bitterly.

Of course he did.

“He said you married him for his family’s money. He said William hated you. He said the trust was your idea and you were manipulating an old man.”

“None of that is true.”

“I know that now.”

“How?”

“Because I saw the Thanksgiving recording.”

My chest tightened.

“How did you get it?”

“Daniel copied it.”

William swore under his breath.

Vanessa continued.

“He came to me this morning. He wanted me to edit a copy.”

Julia stepped closer to the phone.

“Edit it how?”

“Remove the first part.”

My skin went cold.

“The part where Margaret hurts Ethan?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel had watched his mother attack my child.

Then he had taken the video and tried to remove it.

Something inside me finally stopped hoping.

Until that moment, some stupid part of my heart had still been looking for the husband I thought I knew.

Maybe Daniel had been manipulated.

Maybe he had panicked.

Maybe fear had controlled him.

But this was deliberate.

“Did you do it?” I asked.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I saw Ethan’s face.”

Her voice cracked.

“I have a son.”

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa continued.

“I’ve done things I’m ashamed of. I approved transfers. I created companies. I helped Daniel hide money because he told me William was illegally withholding assets that belonged to him.”

Julia asked, “And the forged documents?”

“Margaret’s idea.”

William looked away.

“Of course.”

Vanessa said, “She wanted a backup plan. If William discovered the missing money, they were going to say Emily persuaded him to move assets and then accused Daniel to remove him.”

I felt physically ill.

“They were going to frame me.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“A few months.”

“Before Thanksgiving?”

“Yes.”

That hurt almost more.

Daniel had been preparing to destroy me while coming home each night and asking what I wanted for dinner.

“Why would he do that?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Then I understood.

“You and Daniel.”

Julia looked at me.

William slowly lifted his eyes.

I repeated it.

“You were having an affair.”

Vanessa’s silence answered.

My throat closed.

“How long?”

“Emily—”

“How long?”

“Eight months.”

I sat down.

The room tilted.

Eight months.

My birthday.

Our anniversary.

Ethan’s first soccer season.

The weekend Daniel said William needed him in Chicago.

The night I stayed awake until two because Daniel claimed Vanessa’s mother was in the hospital and he needed to help with an emergency project.

Eight months.

William whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I shook my head.

I did not want anyone apologizing for Daniel.

Vanessa began crying.

“I know you hate me.”

“I don’t know you.”

That was the truth.

“I only knew the version of you my husband invented to explain why he was never home.”

She took a shaky breath.

“He told me your marriage was over.”

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell Ethan?”

“No.”

“Then it wasn’t over.”

Vanessa had no answer.

Julia interrupted.

“We need the files you have.”

“I copied everything.”

“Where?”

“I can arrange delivery.”

“No. You need to meet law enforcement and counsel.”

“I’m scared.”

“Of Daniel?”

“Of Margaret.”

That surprised me.

“Why Margaret?”

Vanessa whispered, “Because Daniel is weak.”

William closed his eyes.

“She knows that too.”

Vanessa continued.

“Margaret is the one who plans everything. Daniel wants money and approval. She uses both.”

“What does she want?”

“The company.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

William did.

I saw it on his face.

“What?”

He looked at Julia.

“Ask Vanessa whether the name Raymond Vale means anything.”

Julia repeated the question.

Vanessa stopped breathing for a second.

“Yes.”

William sat down.

I asked, “Who is Raymond Vale?”

Vanessa answered before William could.

“He owns the third company that received the transfers.”

William stared at the floor.

“He was Margaret’s business partner before I met her.”

“Business partner?”

William gave a bitter smile.

“That’s what she called him.”

My stomach tightened.

“Were they together?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa said, “They’re still in contact.”

William looked up sharply.

“What?”

“I saw messages.”

Julia asked her to explain.

Vanessa said Margaret had communicated with Raymond for years.

The shell company receiving money was not random.

It was his.

William’s face became ashen.

“So she has been sending my money to him.”

“Some of it.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know the total.”

William whispered, “Eleven years.”

I remembered what he had said.

The theft had started eleven years earlier.

Julia asked Vanessa to meet federal investigators.

Vanessa agreed on one condition.

She wanted immunity considered for her cooperation.

Julia said she could not promise anything.

Vanessa said she understood.

Before ending the call, she spoke directly to me.

“Emily.”

I almost did not answer.

“Yes?”

“Daniel is going to call you.”

“Why?”

“He thinks you’ll still choose him.”

I felt something cold settle inside me.

“He’s wrong.”

“He doesn’t know that yet.”

The call ended.

Less than thirty seconds later, Daniel called.

I answered.

He sounded desperate.

“Emily, I need to see you.”

“No.”

“Vanessa called you, didn’t she?”

I stared at the phone.

“How do you know?”

“She told me she was going to.”

“You tried to alter the Thanksgiving video.”

“Listen—”

“You had an affair.”

Silence.

My eyes filled, but I refused to cry while he was listening.

“Eight months.”

“Emily, it wasn’t—”

“Do not insult me by telling me it meant nothing.”

He breathed heavily.

“I was unhappy.”

“So was I.”

“I felt trapped.”

“So did Ethan when your mother had her hands on him.”

“Stop bringing everything back to Mom.”

“Everything comes back to her because you make sure it does.”

He went silent.

Then his voice softened.

“I love you.”

The words disgusted me.

“No.”

“I do.”

“You love having me available.”

“That’s not fair.”

“You emptied our bank account.”

“I can fix that.”

“You cheated on me.”

“I can explain.”

“You helped forge documents with my name.”

Another silence.

That one lasted longer.

“Daniel?”

His voice changed.

“Who told you that?”

I closed my eyes.

Not denial.

Concern about the source.

That told me everything.

“Goodbye, Daniel.”

“Emily, wait.”

I ended the call.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, and frowned.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Daniel just filed for divorce.”

My chest tightened.

Marcus continued.

“And he is asking the court for temporary exclusive possession of your marital home.”

I almost laughed.

“Let him have it.”

Marcus did not smile.

“There’s more.”

May you like

“What?”

“He’s claiming you abandoned the marriage because William promised Ethan millions of dollars.”
