Chapter 2

Nobody moved.
Even Ethan stopped trembling for a second.
Margaret stared at William as if she had misunderstood him.
Daniel was the first person to speak.
“Dad, what are you talking about?”
William kept his eyes on Ethan.
“I’m talking about the only person in this family who has never asked me for anything.”
Margaret gave a sharp laugh.
“He’s seven.”
“Exactly.”
William walked around the table.
He crouched in front of Ethan and looked at his scraped elbow.
“Are you hurt?”
Ethan glanced at me before answering.
“A little.”
“I’m sorry.”
Margaret threw up her hands.
“You’re apologizing to him?”
William slowly stood.
“I’m apologizing because I should have stopped you years ago.”
That changed the room.
Daniel’s sister, Lauren, had been sitting near the window with her husband. She stopped staring at her plate.
Daniel swallowed.
“Stopped her from what?”
William turned toward him.
“From teaching all of you that money is more important than people.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Enough.”
“No.”
William’s voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
“I have been quiet for thirty-eight years. Tonight, I’m finished being quiet.”
He pointed to the small key on the table.
“That opens a private security box at my attorney’s office. Inside are copies of every document I collected during the last six months.”
Daniel’s face lost color again.
I felt it immediately.
He knew something.
“What documents?” I asked.
William looked at me.
“Documents showing that Margaret and Daniel have been moving money out of my company.”
I thought I had heard him wrong.
I turned to my husband.
Daniel would not look at me.
“Daniel?”
“Dad is confused.”
William laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“That is the story you planned to use, isn’t it?”
Margaret stood.
“You’re tired.”
“Sit down.”
Her mouth fell open.
William had never spoken to her that way in front of us.
She remained standing.
He continued anyway.
“Three months ago, my bank notified me about transfers I had supposedly approved. I had approved none of them.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That was company restructuring.”
“Two million, four hundred thousand dollars is not restructuring.”
Lauren gasped.
My stomach dropped.
William looked at his daughter.
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
Lauren turned toward Daniel.
“You told me Dad authorized everything.”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“He did.”
“I did not.”
Margaret stepped between them.
“This is absurd.”
William’s eyes became cold.
“The money went through three companies. Two are controlled by Daniel. The third is controlled by you.”
Silence.
I stared at Daniel.
I had shared a bed with this man for four years.
I had defended him.
I had believed every late meeting, every emergency call, every weekend he supposedly spent fixing problems at William’s company.
“Tell me he’s lying,” I whispered.
Daniel finally looked at me.
“It’s complicated.”
My heart sank.
Margaret snapped, “Emily has nothing to do with this.”
William looked at her.
“She does now.”
He walked back to the table and picked up the key.
“I discovered the transfers because of Ethan.”
Everyone turned toward my son.
Ethan pressed closer to me.
I put my hand on his shoulder.
“What does Ethan have to do with it?”
William’s expression softened.
“Last summer, he spent an afternoon in my study while you were at the doctor.”
I remembered.
William had watched Ethan because Daniel claimed he had an important meeting.
Ethan had come home unusually quiet.
“He heard Daniel and Margaret arguing in the hallway,” William continued.
Daniel suddenly looked alarmed.
“What did he hear?”
William stared at him.
“He heard you tell your mother that once I signed the new authorization forms, you could move the rest.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s not what I meant.”
Ethan whispered, “It is.”
Every adult looked at him.
My son’s voice shook.
“You said Grandpa wouldn’t notice.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Ethan, you misunderstood.”
“No, I didn’t.”
I had never heard my son speak to Daniel that firmly.
Ethan looked up at me.
“I told Grandpa because I thought somebody was stealing his money.”
My chest tightened.
William nodded.
“He was right.”
Margaret pointed at Ethan.
“You little spy.”
I moved between them instantly.
“Do not speak to him.”
William slammed his palm against the table.
“Do not ever speak to him like that again.”
Margaret recoiled.
William looked at everyone.
“I investigated quietly. My attorney hired forensic accountants. They found false invoices, unauthorized transfers, and a draft petition requesting that I be declared mentally incompetent.”
Lauren stood so quickly her chair tipped.
“What?”
William looked at Daniel.
“My own son was preparing to take control of my company by claiming I could no longer manage my affairs.”
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Dad, Mom said you were forgetting things.”
Margaret spun toward him.
“Don’t you dare.”
That was the moment I understood.
They were not united.
They were scared.
William did too.
He smiled sadly.
“There it is.”
Daniel backed away.
“Dad—”
“No.”
William pointed toward the doorway.
“You are terminated from the company effective tonight.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You can’t do that.”
“I already did.”
Margaret shouted, “He is your son!”
“And that was supposed to mean he could rob me?”
Daniel’s face twisted.
“I was protecting what would eventually be mine.”
William went completely still.
Then he looked at Ethan.
“That sentence is exactly why it will never be yours.”
Daniel stared at his father.
William continued.
“This afternoon, before dinner, I signed a new trust.”
Margaret’s confidence vanished.
“A trust?”
“My personal assets, controlling shares, properties, and investment accounts are being transferred into it.”
Daniel whispered, “Who controls it?”
William looked at me.
“Emily will serve as Ethan’s guardian trustee until he turns thirty.”
My knees nearly gave out.
“What?”
Margaret screamed.
“No!”
William did not blink.
“If Emily refuses, a professional fiduciary appointed by my attorney will serve instead. Daniel will have no authority over it.”
Daniel grabbed the back of his chair.
“You gave her control?”
“I gave control to someone who ran toward a frightened child while you sat there.”
His words hit harder than anything I could have said.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily, tell him you won’t accept this.”
I stared at my husband.
Then I remembered Ethan hitting the floor.
I remembered Daniel saying only, “Mom, calm down.”
Not standing.
Not protecting him.
Not even touching him afterward.
Ethan squeezed my hand.
Margaret suddenly moved toward William.
“You can undo this.”
“No.”
“You will undo it.”
“No.”
Her voice dropped.
“After everything I have done for you?”
William looked at her for a long time.
Then he said something that made Margaret stop breathing.
“I know what you did to my medication.”
Daniel whispered, “What medication?”
Margaret’s face went white.
William put the key back into his pocket.
“We’ll discuss that with my attorney.”
Margaret lunged toward him.
Lauren stepped between them.
“Mom!”
William did not flinch.
“Thanksgiving is over.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Take nothing from my office.”
Then he looked at me and Ethan.
“You two are leaving with me.”
Daniel finally moved.
He caught my wrist.
“Emily, you’re my wife.”
I looked down at his hand.
“Then start acting like my husband.”
He let go.
I picked up Ethan’s coat.
Margaret was crying now, but not the way Ethan had cried.
Her tears looked angry.
“You walk out with him,” she told me, “and you will destroy this family.”
I opened the front door.
Cold air rushed across my face.
I looked back at her.
“No, Margaret.”
I pulled Ethan close.
“You did that when you put your hands on my son.”
William followed us outside.
Behind me, Daniel called my name.
I kept walking.
Then William quietly said, “Emily, there’s one more thing you need to know.”
I stopped.
May you like
He looked toward the house.
“What Daniel and Margaret stole was not the worst thing I found.”
