Chapter 3

I wanted to turn around.

I wanted to demand the rest immediately.

Instead, Ethan started shaking again.

That decided everything.

“Not in front of him,” I told William.

William nodded.

“You’re right.”

We drove to William’s downtown apartment, a place I had only visited twice.

Margaret hated it.

She called it his “sad little escape,” even though the apartment occupied half the top floor of a secure building and overlooked the river.

To me, it suddenly felt like the safest place in the city.

William asked the building manager to increase security.

Then he made hot chocolate for Ethan himself.

It was almost midnight when Ethan finally fell asleep on the guest-room sofa with his head in my lap.

William sat across from me.

For the first time all night, he looked old.

Not weak.

Just exhausted.

“What did you mean?” I asked.

“About what you found?”

William looked toward Ethan.

“Daniel helped Margaret move company money, but the financial theft started long before he became involved.”

“How long?”

“Eleven years.”

My stomach tightened.

William rubbed both hands over his face.

“I trusted Margaret with parts of our personal finances. She was moving smaller amounts through businesses owned by people I thought were family friends.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know all of it yet.”

“You said something about your medication.”

His eyes met mine.

“I developed dizziness last winter. Confusion. Headaches. Margaret became very concerned in front of everyone.”

I remembered.

She had told Daniel that William was declining.

She had whispered about dementia.

She had even criticized him for repeating himself during Christmas dinner.

“I went to another doctor without telling her,” William continued. “He changed the timing of several medications and told me to keep my prescriptions locked away.”

“What happened?”

“The symptoms improved.”

A chill ran through me.

“Are you saying Margaret was giving you something?”

“I’m saying medication was disappearing too quickly, and doses were not matching what my doctor prescribed.”

I stared at him.

“William, that’s serious.”

“I know.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

“My attorney.”

“Police?”

“Not yet. We needed proof.”

I glanced toward Ethan.

“He cannot be anywhere near her again.”

“He won’t be.”

My phone vibrated.

Daniel.

I ignored it.

It rang again.

Then again.

On the fourth call, I answered.

“What?”

“Where are you?”

His voice was tight.

“Somewhere Ethan is safe.”

“Bring him home.”

I almost laughed.

“Home?”

“Our home, Emily.”

“You watched your mother shove him onto the floor.”

“I froze.”

“She hit him.”

“I know.”

“And you grabbed me.”

“To stop you from attacking my mother.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“There it is.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“It sounded very clear.”

Daniel exhaled hard.

“My dad is angry. He’s saying things he doesn’t understand.”

I looked directly at William.

“He understands plenty.”

“Is he there?”

“Yes.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Emily, listen to me carefully. Dad’s making a huge mistake. If he transfers the company into that trust, people lose jobs. Contracts collapse. Everything falls apart.”

“You mean you lose control.”

“You don’t know how the business works.”

“No. Apparently I don’t know how my marriage works either.”

“Don’t do this.”

“You did this.”

His voice became colder.

“You assaulted my mother.”

I felt my body go still.

“After she attacked my child.”

“That isn’t how she’s describing it.”

I looked at William.

He was watching me carefully.

“What is she doing?”

Daniel paused too long.

“What is Margaret doing?”

“She called the police.”

My chest tightened.

“For what?”

“She says you assaulted her repeatedly in her home.”

I looked down at sleeping Ethan.

“Did she mention shoving a seven-year-old boy?”

“She says Ethan fell.”

I closed my eyes.

“Of course she does.”

“Come back and we can straighten this out.”

The sentence sounded wrong.

Too smooth.

Too prepared.

“No.”

“Emily.”

“No.”

His tone changed.

“If you stay with Dad tonight, it’s going to look like you manipulated him.”

I almost stopped breathing.

There it was.

The second attack had already begun.

“You’re going to accuse me of taking advantage of him.”

“I’m telling you what people might think.”

“You mean what you plan to tell them.”

“Stop twisting my words.”

I ended the call.

My hands were trembling.

William spoke quietly.

“He threatened you.”

“He didn’t have to.”

A few minutes later, the building manager called upstairs.

Two police officers were in the lobby.

I looked at Ethan.

William stood.

“I’ll handle it.”

“No.”

I gently moved Ethan’s head onto a pillow.

“I’m done letting other people handle things while I stay silent.”

I went downstairs with William.

The officers were professional.

They told me Margaret had reported being struck multiple times.

I told them exactly what happened.

I did not minimize my actions.

“I slapped her after she pushed my son from his chair and hit him in the back of the head.”

One officer asked, “Any witnesses?”

“Eleven.”

William said, “Including me.”

The officer looked at him.

“Any video?”

William hesitated.

Then his expression changed.

“Yes.”

I turned toward him.

“There is?”

“My dining room security system.”

I had forgotten.

Margaret complained constantly about William’s cameras after a burglary at one of their properties.

William pulled out his phone.

“The system records the dining room entrance and most of the table.”

The officers exchanged glances.

One asked him to preserve the recording.

William nodded.

“I will provide it through my attorney.”

My knees weakened with relief.

Margaret had lied before she remembered the camera.

That mistake might have saved me.

We were returning upstairs when the elevator doors opened.

Daniel stepped out.

He looked furious.

“How did you get up here?” William demanded.

Daniel held up his old building access card.

William turned to the manager.

“Deactivate it.”

Daniel ignored him.

He looked at me.

“We need to talk alone.”

“No.”

“Emily, I’m your husband.”

“Not alone.”

His eyes moved toward William.

“This is exactly what he wants. He’s turning you against me.”

I stared at him.

“Your mother attacked Ethan.”

“I know.”

“You helped move your father’s money.”

Daniel looked around the lobby.

“Lower your voice.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“No.”

For years, I had lowered my voice when Daniel looked embarrassed.

I had softened problems.

I had apologized for things that were not my fault.

That ended in the lobby.

“You were helping your mother prepare to call your father incompetent.”

Daniel’s face changed.

William stepped forward.

“You told her?”

“I didn’t need to tell her much.”

Daniel looked trapped.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Mom told me you were dying.”

William froze.

“What?”

“She said your doctors gave you maybe a year.”

My anger cracked just enough for confusion to enter.

William whispered, “No doctor ever told me that.”

Daniel stared at him.

For the first time, he looked genuinely shocked.

William continued.

“I’m not dying.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I realized Margaret had manipulated him too.

It did not erase what he had done.

But it changed something.

Daniel sank into a lobby chair.

“She said you wanted me to secure everything before you became too sick.”

William’s expression was devastated.

“You never asked me.”

Daniel covered his face.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she said you were ashamed.”

William stepped back.

Daniel looked at me.

“I thought I was protecting the company.”

“You still moved money.”

“I moved what Mom told me to move.”

“You signed documents.”

“Yes.”

“You planned to declare him incompetent.”

Daniel’s silence answered.

I shook my head.

“You believed your mother before you asked your father one question.”

His eyes filled.

“I made a mistake.”

“No.”

I thought about Ethan on the floor.

“You made choices.”

The elevator opened again.

A security employee stepped out.

He handed William a small envelope from the front desk.

“Courier just delivered this.”

William opened it.

Inside was a notice from a law firm.

His face hardened.

“What?”

He handed it to me.

Margaret had filed an emergency petition.

May you like

She was asking a court to declare William mentally incapacitated.

And Daniel’s name was listed as the person she wanted appointed to control everything.
