Chapter 5

I called Daniel immediately.

He answered on the first ring.

“Emily?”

“Did you tell Margaret where Ethan’s classroom is?”

Silence.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Daniel.”

“She asked.”

“Why?”

“She said she wanted to volunteer at his holiday party.”

My anger exploded.

“You gave the woman who shoved him onto the floor information about his classroom.”

“That happened after I told her.”

“And did you call the school this morning to stop her?”

“I didn’t know she was going there.”

“She tried to make herself an authorized pickup.”

“What?”

I looked at Julia.

She nodded for me to continue.

“Someone created an email address almost identical to mine and tried to change Ethan’s emergency contacts.”

Daniel sounded genuinely stunned.

“I didn’t do that.”

“Did your mother?”

“I don’t know.”

“You live in the same house with her.”

“I stayed at the office last night.”

“Then find out.”

He lowered his voice.

“Emily, I need you to believe me. I would never let Mom take Ethan without permission.”

“You let her put her hands on him.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“It is to me.”

I ended the call.

Julia requested emergency protection that morning.

She also arranged for a family-law attorney named Marcus Hale to meet me.

By noon, my life had become a stack of decisions I never imagined making.

Temporary separation.

School safety.

Financial accounts.

Custody rights.

A possible police investigation.

William’s court hearing.

And through all of it, Ethan sat at the kitchen island coloring a dinosaur as if concentrating hard enough might make the adults disappear.

I hated that.

I wanted him thinking about cartoons and missing teeth.

Not trusts and emergency contacts.

Marcus arrived after lunch.

His first question surprised me.

“Has Daniel adopted Ethan?”

“No.”

“Any legal guardianship?”

“No.”

“He is not listed on Ethan’s birth certificate?”

“No.”

“Then absent some separate court order, Daniel does not currently have independent parental rights.”

I felt both relief and sadness.

Daniel had called himself Ethan’s father for years.

But he had never made it official.

Marcus continued.

“However, he could petition for stepparent visitation depending on circumstances. For now, the primary concern is Margaret.”

“What do I do?”

“Keep Ethan with you. Notify the school in writing. Change passwords. Review who has access to medical, school, and childcare records.”

I nodded.

“Should I leave Daniel?”

Marcus did not answer immediately.

“That’s a personal decision.”

“I mean legally.”

“Legally, you should protect important documents and separate access to funds you are entitled to control.”

I thought about our bank accounts.

Daniel handled most of them.

Another mistake I had never considered a mistake until now.

I opened my banking app.

The joint checking account contained three hundred and twelve dollars.

I stared at the number.

There had been more than eighteen thousand two days earlier.

“William.”

He looked up.

“Our money is gone.”

Marcus leaned closer.

I showed him.

He asked, “Any large transactions listed?”

One transfer.

Seventeen thousand eight hundred dollars.

To an account I did not recognize.

The transaction had occurred at 4:32 that morning.

I called Daniel again.

“What did you do with our money?”

“What?”

“The checking account.”

A pause.

“I moved it.”

“Where?”

“To protect it.”

“From whom?”

Another pause.

“Dad.”

I laughed in disbelief.

“Your father cannot take our joint checking account.”

“Everything is unstable right now.”

“You left me and Ethan with three hundred dollars.”

“I’ll pay whatever you need.”

“That was my money too.”

“You weren’t using it.”

I stared out the window.

That sentence changed something.

Maybe because it sounded so natural to him.

So ordinary.

As if my access to our money depended on whether he approved of my immediate need.

“Put half back.”

“We need to talk first.”

“No.”

“Then I’m not moving anything.”

Marcus lifted a finger.

He wanted me to stop.

I ended the call.

“He just admitted it,” I said.

“Good.”

“Good?”

“You have a record of the call?”

I nodded.

My phone automatically kept a transcript through a accessibility service I used for work.

Marcus asked me to preserve it.

Then William’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face became blank.

“Are you sure?”

Julia stood.

“What happened?”

William ended the call.

“The company’s chief financial officer resigned this morning.”

Julia frowned.

“Vanessa?”

William nodded.

Daniel had mentioned Vanessa hundreds of times.

Late meetings with Vanessa.

Budget calls with Vanessa.

Business dinners with Vanessa.

Emergency weekend reviews with Vanessa.

I felt suddenly sick.

William looked at me.

“Emily?”

“Daniel was with her constantly.”

Julia asked, “Do you think she was involved in the transfers?”

William’s mouth tightened.

“I know she approved several.”

He called the company.

Vanessa’s office had already been cleared.

Her laptop remained, but personal belongings were gone.

Then security reported something worse.

Daniel had entered the executive floor at 5:40 that morning using a maintenance entrance.

He had left twenty minutes later carrying a black storage case.

William closed his eyes.

“He took records.”

Julia was already calling someone.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Marcus said, “Answer. Speaker.”

I did.

A woman’s voice said, “Emily?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Vanessa Cole.”

Every person in the room became still.

I stood.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“What do you want?”

“To warn you.”

My heart started pounding.

“About Daniel?”

“Yes.”

William stepped closer.

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel knows the trust cannot be touched as long as William is considered competent.”

Julia’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?”

Vanessa heard her.

“Who is that?”

“William’s attorney.”

“Good.”

Her breathing sounded uneven.

“Then listen carefully.”

I gripped the phone.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Margaret isn’t trying to prove William has dementia anymore.”

Julia asked, “Then what is she doing?”

Vanessa answered.

“She’s going to claim Emily created the entire fraud investigation to get control of William’s estate.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“They have documents.”

“What documents?”

“Fake ones.”

William went pale.

May you like

Vanessa continued.

“And some of them have Emily’s signature.”
