Chapter 11

I sat on Daniel’s office floor staring at Nathan’s name.

For seven years, I had known exactly three things about Ethan’s biological father.

His name was Nathan Reed.

He had loved old motorcycles.

And he had died in a highway accident before I learned I was pregnant.

We had dated for less than a year.

He was private about his family.

He said they were complicated.

I understood that.

My own parents had died when I was in college, and I had no siblings.

Nathan and I had built our relationship around the present.

I never pushed.

Then he died.

And now Margaret had written that William could never learn who he really was.

My hands went numb.

One of the security men knocked lightly.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“I need a minute.”

Ethan sat beside me.

“Who’s Nathan?”

I closed the folder.

“Someone I knew before you were born.”

“Is he my dad?”

I looked at my son.

Daniel and I had always told Ethan the truth in simple terms.

That his biological father had died.

That Daniel became his dad later.

But I had rarely used Nathan’s name.

“Yes.”

Ethan touched the folder.

“Why does Grandma have it?”

“I don’t know.”

That frightened me more than any answer.

I called William.

“Do you know someone named Nathan Reed?”

Silence.

“William?”

“Where did you hear that name?”

My heart started pounding.

“You know him.”

Another silence.

Then William said, “Emily, leave the house.”

“What?”

“Take Ethan and leave right now.”

His tone scared me.

I stood immediately.

“Why?”

“Not over the phone.”

We drove back to his apartment.

William was waiting by the elevator.

He looked shaken.

I handed him the folder.

He saw Nathan’s photograph and sat down.

For a long time, he simply stared.

“William?”

His eyes filled.

“I knew him as Nathan Vale.”

My stomach dropped.

“Vale?”

“Raymond Vale’s son.”

The room disappeared around me.

“No.”

William turned the investigator report toward me.

The photograph showed Nathan at twenty-eight.

My Nathan.

Same crooked smile.

Same dark hair falling across his forehead.

William whispered, “I met him twice.”

“When?”

“Years before you knew him.”

“Why?”

“Raymond brought him to a company event.”

I could barely breathe.

“Margaret knew Nathan was Raymond’s son?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide it?”

William stood and began pacing.

“I don’t know.”

Julia arrived twenty minutes later.

She read the report.

Then she read Margaret’s handwritten note.

“This explains why she investigated Emily.”

I looked at her.

“How?”

“If Margaret knew Ethan was Raymond’s grandson, she may have worried William would discover the connection between her and Raymond.”

My skin went cold.

William stopped pacing.

“Ethan.”

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Margaret didn’t hate Ethan because he wasn’t family.”

I already knew what he was thinking.

“She hated him because he connected the families.”

William nodded.

Nathan was Raymond’s son.

Ethan was Raymond’s grandson.

And Margaret had secretly transferred millions to Raymond.

If William ever investigated Ethan’s father, he might find Raymond.

I felt sick.

“She was afraid of a seven-year-old child because of his last name.”

“Possibly.”

“But Nathan used Reed.”

William frowned.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Julia asked whether Nathan’s mother used that surname.

I had no idea.

I had never met her.

Nathan told me his mother died when he was young.

Julia contacted investigators.

Within an hour, they confirmed Nathan Vale had legally changed his surname to Reed at twenty-one.

Reed was his mother’s maiden name.

Then they found something worse.

Nathan had been estranged from Raymond for almost a decade before his death.

Court records showed Nathan had once requested a restraining order after an argument with his father.

The request had been dismissed when Nathan stopped pursuing it.

I stared at the record.

“I never knew any of this.”

William said, “Maybe he was trying to escape him.”

That felt true.

Nathan hated controlling people.

He once told me the most dangerous cage was the one built by somebody who insisted they loved you.

At the time, I thought he was speaking philosophically.

Now I knew better.

Julia called again.

“Emily, investigators found another connection.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

“Nathan contacted William’s company two weeks before his death.”

William turned.

“He did?”

“There’s an archived email.”

“What did it say?”

“We don’t have the body yet. Only server metadata.”

William sat down.

“Who did he email?”

Julia’s expression tightened.

“Margaret.”

The room went silent.

I whispered, “Two weeks before he died?”

“Yes.”

“Did she answer?”

“There was a reply.”

My hands began shaking.

“What did it say?”

“They’re recovering it.”

William looked devastated.

“If Nathan knew something about Raymond and Margaret…”

I finished the thought.

“He might have been trying to warn you.”

Nobody said anything.

That night I dreamed about Nathan for the first time in years.

He was standing on the opposite side of a road.

I could see his mouth moving.

I could not hear him.

I woke before dawn.

Ethan was beside me.

He had crawled into my bed during the night.

I watched him breathe.

Nathan’s son.

Raymond Vale’s grandson.

A child Margaret had spent years treating like dirt because his existence threatened a secret.

My sadness turned into fury.

At nine, investigators recovered the email.

Julia read it to us from her notes.

Nathan had written:

Mrs. Carter, I know what you and my father are doing. I want no money. I want no part of him. But if you continue, I will contact your husband directly.

Margaret replied fourteen minutes later.

You have misunderstood everything. Do not involve yourself in matters that do not concern you.

Nathan sent one final message.

It concerns me when my father uses people and destroys families. I will not stay silent.

I stopped breathing.

Two weeks later, Nathan died.

I looked at Julia.

“Was his accident really an accident?”

She did not answer immediately.

“We have no evidence suggesting otherwise.”

“But you’re thinking it.”

“I’m saying we should not jump from suspicious timing to an accusation.”

William looked grim.

“Raymond had influence.”

Julia nodded.

“That is why investigators are reviewing the old case.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man spoke.

“Emily Carter?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Raymond Vale.”

Every hair on my arms rose.

William stepped closer.

I put the call on speaker.

Raymond continued.

“I believe we need to discuss my grandson.”

I stared at Ethan’s bedroom door.

“You stay away from him.”

Raymond was quiet.

Then he said, “Margaret told me you would react emotionally.”

William’s face hardened.

I gripped the phone.

“How recently have you spoken to Margaret?”

May you like

Raymond answered with one sentence.

“Emily, Margaret and I have been speaking since before Daniel was born.”
