Chapter 9 - The Truth on the Jumbotron

The first image that appeared on the giant screens was an official document stamped with the gold seal of the *Zurich University Institute of Reproductive Medicine*.

Across the thirty-foot display, the medical verdict was projected in crystal-clear high-definition:

**PATIENT: JULIAN VANCE**

**DIAGNOSIS: IRREVERSIBLE BILATERAL SPERMATIC ATROPHY (COMPLETE AZOOSPERMIA).**

**BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 0.00%**

A collective gasp echoed across eight hundred people.

"My God..." a senator’s wife whispered, covering her mouth.

"Julian is sterile?"

Arthur Vance stared up at the screen, his mouth hanging open, his cane slipping from his hand and clattering against the stage floor. "No... no, that's impossible... that's a forgery!"

"It’s not a forgery, Father," Julian spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing with devastating clarity. "I confirmed it today with Dr. Henderson. I have been completely sterile for nearly a year."

Julian turned slowly to face Victoria Sterling.

Victoria’s face was chalk-white. She stood frozen in the center of the stage, her hands trembling over her stomach, looking like a trapped animal in the glare of high beams.

"Which brings us to the obvious question," Julian said, his eyes burning into hers. "Whose child are you carrying, Victoria?"

Before Victoria could speak, the screen flickered again.

A series of high-resolution security photographs flashed across the jumbotron.

They were dated November 14th of the previous year—the exact week Julian was fighting for his life in the Zurich hospital.

The photos showed Victoria Sterling and Thomas Sterling entering the penthouse suite of the Badrutt's Palace Hotel in St. Moritz. The subsequent photos, taken from the corridor surveillance, showed them wrapped in each other's arms, kissing passionately outside room 402.

The entire ballroom erupted into absolute bedlam.

Socialites gasped. Photographers pushed forward, their lenses pointed directly at Victoria’s horrified, weeping face.

"Thomas?!" Arthur Vance roared, clutching his chest, his eyes bulging as he stared at Victoria's cousin. "THOMAS?!"

"Arthur, please!" Thomas yelled from the grip of the security guards, his voice cracked with panic. "We were broke! The Sterling trust was completely dry! We needed the Vance inheritance to survive!"

Victoria collapsed to her knees on the stage, the emerald silk of her gown pooling around her. "Julian, please! Listen to me! It was a mistake! We can still be together! The baby... the baby needs a father!"

Julian looked down at her with pure, unadulterated disgust.

"You called Emily a barren parasite," Julian whispered, the microphone picking up every shuddering breath. "You stood in my father's house and let him slap her. You let my family humiliate the only woman who ever loved me for who I was... while you were carrying my cousin's bastard."

Julian threw the microphone onto the stage floor. It let out a piercing screech of feedback.

He turned toward the edge of the stage, where Emily stood.

Julian fell to his knees at the foot of the stage, tears streaming freely down his face, right before the eyes of eight hundred of the most powerful people in America.

"Emily..." Julian choked out, his voice cracking with agony. "Emily, please... forgive me. I didn't know. I swear to God I didn't know what you sacrificed for me. Please, come back to me. I will spend the rest of my life making it right."
