Chapter 10 - The Price of Ruin

Emily looked down at Julian Vance kneeling before her.

Five years of memories flashed through her mind. The promises he had made in the rain in Paris. The quiet nights they had shared before his family’s poison seeped into his soul. The hundreds of times he had stood by and allowed his father to demean her, chipping away at her dignity piece by piece.

She remembered the sting of Arthur's palm across her cheek just twenty-four hours ago. She remembered Julian sitting on that velvet couch, looking at his shoes while she bled on the rug.

A woman can endure a storm for the man she loves. But once she realizes that the man *is* the storm, there is no going back.

Emily stepped forward. She stopped inches from where Julian knelt on the cold marble floor.

"Julian," she said softly.

Julian looked up, his eyes filled with desperate, pathetic hope. "Emily... my love..."

"When your father slapped me across the face," Emily whispered, her voice calm, beautiful, and completely devoid of warmth, "you sat there. You weighed my dignity against your inheritance. You chose money over blood, and cowardice over truth."

Julian’s face crumpled. "I was terrified, Emily! I was weak!"

"You were," Emily agreed. "And weakness has a price."

Emily reached into her beige leather handbag one final time.

She pulled out the signed calfskin divorce decree from the previous night.

With steady fingers, she signed the final administrative page, confirming the immediate legal dissolution of their marriage. She dropped the heavy leather binder onto the floor next to Julian’s knees.

"You wanted a divorce, Julian. You have it."

Emily turned her gaze toward Arthur Vance, who had slumped into a chair on the stage, his breathing shallow and erratic as paramedics rushed through the side doors of the ballroom to tend to his failing heart.

"Arthur," Emily called out across the silent room. "Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, the Vance estate in Greenwich will be repossessed by Valmont Capital. You have twelve hours to pack your clothes. Anything remaining on the property will be liquidated at public auction."

Evelyn Vance let out a shrill scream of despair, collapsing against a champagne table and shattering dozens of crystal glasses onto the floor.

Victoria sat weeping inconsolably on the stage, her hands clutching her head as photographers swarmed the riser, documenting her utter disgrace.

Emily did not look back.

She turned on her heels, her midnight-blue gown sweeping across the marble floor.

"Michael," Emily said calmly.

"Yes, Lady St. Claire?" Michael Cross responded, stepping up beside her.

"Prepare the private jet for Zurich. It’s time to go home."

"Immediately, ma'am."

Flanked by her security detail, Emily walked through the parted crowd of billionaires, politicians, and tycoons. Not a single person dared to speak. Not a single person dared to breathe. They stood in stunned reverence, watching the woman who had walked into the lion’s den, stripped the predators of their teeth, and walked out without a single scratch.

Emily stepped out of the grand doors of the Plaza Hotel into the crisp Manhattan night air.

The rain from the night before had cleared. The city sky was vast, cold, and clear, glittering with a million distant stars.

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up to the curb, its door held open by a uniformed chauffeur.

Emily paused for a brief moment on the sidewalk. She took a deep, clean breath of the autumn air—the first breath of true freedom she had taken in five years.

She touched her lip. The cut had already stopped hurting.

With a faint, triumphant smile, Emily stepped into the car, the door clicked shut with a heavy, impenetrable thud, and the vehicle glided away into the glittering New York night, leaving the Vance empire behind in ashes.
