Chapter 7 - The Gala of Wolves

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of champagne, diamonds, and sheer New York opulence.

Over eight hundred elite guests—billionaires, foreign dignitaries, media moguls, and high-ranking politicians—milled beneath crystal chandeliers, celebrating the Fortieth Anniversary of Vance Global Logistics. Orchestral music drifted through the air, and towering ice sculptures bearing the Vance crest stood gleaming on pedestals of white marble.

At the head of the grand ballroom, Arthur Vance stood holding court.

Despite the catastrophic financial bloodbath occurring behind closed doors, Arthur had spent the afternoon heavily medicated on beta-blockers and blood pressure pills. He wore a tuxedo worth fifteen thousand dollars, his white hair styled with imperious perfection.

Beside him, Victoria Sterling was the star of the evening. She was dressed in an emerald green silk gown designed to accentuate her baby bump. Society photographers crowded around her, flashes exploding like lightning strikes as she beamed, accepting congratulations from senators and ambassadors.

"You look breathtaking, darling," Evelyn Vance purred, adjusting a four-carat diamond necklace around Victoria’s throat. "Tonight, the Vance and Sterling dynasties become one. Arthur will announce the merger and the coming heir on stage in ten minutes."

Victoria smiled, her eyes glittering with greed. "Thank you, Mother Vance. It is an honor to give this family what it has always deserved."

Across the room, standing near the shadows of the mezzanine bar, Julian leaned against a pillar.

He was drowning. He had swallowed four glasses of scotch in under an hour, but the alcohol did nothing to numb the ice in his veins. He watched Victoria laugh with the press. He watched Thomas Sterling, who was lurking near Victoria like a nervous hyena, occasionally whispering in her ear.

Julian knew the truth now.

He knew that Thomas and Victoria had plotted together to secure the Vance fortune, using an illegitimate child to cement their control before Vance Global collapsed. They had used him as a pathetic, sterile pawn.

"Ladies and gentlemen!"

The deep, amplified voice of the master of ceremonies echoed through the ballroom, cutting through the chatter. The lights dimmed, and the crowd turned their attention toward the central stage.

Arthur Vance climbed the stairs to the podium, his posture rigid, his smile projecting absolute confidence. The applause was deafening.

"Distinguished guests, family, and lifelong friends," Arthur began, his voice booming through the speakers. "For forty years, Vance Global has been the iron backbone of international trade. But a company is only as strong as its legacy. And tonight, I am not merely celebrating our past... I am unveiling our future."

Arthur gestured toward the stage stairs. "Please join me in welcoming my son, Julian Vance, and his magnificent fiancée, Victoria Sterling—who carries within her the next sovereign chairman of the Vance dynasty!"

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause. Victoria, radiant and triumphant, gathered her emerald train and ascended the stage, extending her hand toward Arthur.

"Julian!" Arthur barked into the microphone, his eyes searching the mezzanine. "Julian, join your family!"

Julian did not move. He stood frozen in the shadows, his knuckles white against his scotch glass.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the Plaza ballroom burst open.

A shockwave of stunned silence rippled through the eight hundred guests.

Flanked by six towering private security personnel in bespoke charcoal suits, a woman stepped onto the crimson runner of the grand aisle.

The room gasped.

She was not the simple, unassuming girl who had lived quietly in the Vance shadows.

She wore a breathtaking, midnight-blue velvet gown by Schiaparelli, tailored to perfection, with a diamond choker of such extraordinary brilliance that it caught the chandelier light and cast sharp, blinding prisms across the room. Her dark hair was swept up in an intricate, regal chignon, revealing the flawless, aristocratic angles of her face.

Her cut lip was painted over with bold, lethal crimson.

Walking immediately behind her was Michael Cross, flanked by three senior partners from Skadden Arps, carrying leather litigation cases.

"Emily?" Victoria’s voice slipped out over the open stage microphone, shrill and panicked.

Arthur’s face contorted into pure, violent rage. He grabbed the podium microphone. "What is the meaning of this?! Security! Remove this trespasser immediately! She was stripped of all rights to the Vance name last night!"

Emily didn't flinch. She didn't slow her pace. She walked up the center aisle with the commanding grace of an empress entering an arena of scavengers.

The Plaza Hotel security guards moved to intercept her, but before they could take two steps, Michael Cross raised a single leather credential.

"Touch her, and your firm faces immediate federal prosecution," Michael’s voice cut through the silence with absolute legal authority. "You are looking at Emily Vance-St. Claire—the majority owner and primary creditor of Vance Global Logistics."
