Chapter 2 - Ashes on White Marble

Julian looked up, startled by the venom in Emily's voice. What he saw in her eyes sent a sudden chill racing down his spine. The sweet, gentle girl who used to pack his lunches when he worked late at the firm, who used to nurse him through agonizing migraines, was gone. Standing before him was a stranger—regal, lethal, and horrifyingly calm.

"Emily—" Julian began, his voice cracking.

Emily didn't answer him. Instead, she held the twelve-million-dollar check aloft.

Slowly, deliberately, she tore it in half.

*Rrrriiiip.*

Arthur Vance's eyes widened in disbelief. "What the hell are you doing?! That is twelve million dollars!"

*Rrrrriiiip.*

Emily tore it again, crosswise, reducing the check to four neat quarters.

"You think your filthy money bought my silence?" Emily said, her voice dropping to a low, razor-sharp whisper that echoed off the high ceiling. "You think you can slap me across the face, replace me with a socialite mistress, and hand me an allowance to ease your decrepit conscience?"

She tore the pieces once more, until they were nothing but shredded confetti. With a flick of her wrist, she scattered the scraps into the air. They drifted like dirty white snow, settling across the mahogany desk, Julian’s polished shoes, and the hem of Victoria’s silk gown.

"You keep your money, Arthur," Emily said, turning her burning gaze onto the billionaire patriarch. "Because before this year is out, you are going to need every single penny just to afford your legal defense."

Victoria gasped, clutching Julian’s arm. "Julian, she’s insane! Call security! Throw her out into the street!"

"Security won't be necessary," Emily replied coldly.

She turned and walked calmly toward the antique armchair near the fireplace, where her simple, unbranded beige leather handbag rested. She picked it up and slipped the strap over her slender shoulder.

Arthur’s face was purplish-red. Veins bulged along his temples. "Get out of my house! You leave this estate with nothing! Not a dime, not a car, nothing! You walk out into the storm!"

Emily paused at the heavy double doors of the library. She didn't look back at Arthur. She didn't look at Evelyn, who had finally set down her champagne glass with a nervous tremor. Her eyes locked squarely onto Julian.

"You chose your bloodline, Julian," Emily said quietly. "You chose what you believed was your future."

A wave of inexplicable terror washed over Julian Vance. Something about the way she spoke sounded like a eulogy—not for their marriage, but for him.

"Emily, wait..." Julian pushed himself up from the couch, shaking off Victoria's frantic grip. "What are you talking about?"

"Ask Victoria," Emily said softly, a ghost of an enigmatic smile touching her cut lip. "And Julian? Check the date on the pathology report from your hospital stay in Zurich last November."

With that, she pushed open the doors and stepped out into the grand marble foyer.

Outside, the Greenwich night had descended into an icy autumn deluge. Torrential rain beat against the glass lanterns lining the grand driveway. Emily walked down the front steps, the wind whipping her coat around her knees.

She did not call a cab. She did not weep.

She reached into her beige handbag, pulled out a sleek, encrypted titanium smartphone, and pressed a single pre-set button.

The line connected on the first ring.

"Ma'am?" a crisp, authoritative male voice answered.

"Michael," Emily said, her tone devoid of emotion, her voice steady against the howling wind. "It’s done. The Vance family has signed the dissolution papers without reading the subsidiary financial clauses."

There was a brief pause on the other end, followed by the rustling of high-level legal dossiers. "Understood, Director. Shall we initiate Project Nemesis?"

Emily looked back at the sprawling, lighted silhouette of the Vance mansion—a monument to stolen wealth, arrogance, and cruelty.

"Initiate full market foreclosure," Emily whispered into the phone. "Strip the foundation from under their feet. And Michael?"

"Yes, Ma'am?"

"Send the medical courier to the Vance headquarters tomorrow morning. Let them celebrate tonight. Tomorrow, they burn."
