Chapter 8 - The Hostile Takeover

The entire Plaza ballroom went dead silent. You could have heard a diamond pin drop onto the marble floor.
"St. Claire?" someone in the front row of Wall Street titans whispered.
"The European trust?" another CEO gasped. "The Sovereign St. Claire family?!"
Arthur Vance’s face turned from furious red to an ashen, sickly gray. He clutched the edges of the podium, his knuckles popping. "Lies! Slander! She is an orphan! A nobody from Boston!"
Emily reached the foot of the stage. She paused, looking up at Arthur with eyes that held no anger, no sorrow—only the crushing, indifferent finality of an executioner.
"My father was Prince Henri St. Claire, Arthur," Emily spoke. Her voice was amplified through the lapel mic pinned to Michael Cross’s lapel, carrying clearly to every corner of the room. "And six years ago, I chose to walk away from my family's empire because I believed in something as naive as true love. I gave Julian five years of my life. I gave your family hundreds of millions of dollars in anonymous subsidies to keep your rotting shipping fleet from sinking into bankruptcy."
The crowd murmured in shock. Arthur felt his knees tremble beneath his tuxedo.
"What... what are you talking about?" Arthur stammered, his bravado crumbling.
Michael Cross stepped forward, opening a black leather dossier. "At 4:00 PM today, Valmont Global Capital officially foreclosed on the two point four billion debt note defaulted by Vance Global Logistics. Due to non-payment of the accelerated margin call, ninety-four percent of all voting shares have been transferred to Lady Emily St. Claire."
Michael looked up at Arthur with a chilling smile. "Arthur Vance, your tenure as Chairman and CEO is officially terminated. You have thirty minutes to vacate these premises before federal marshals seize your corporate accounts."
"NO!" Victoria screamed from the stage, her voice trembling with hysteria. "This is a setup! Julian, do something! She’s trying to steal your inheritance! Tell them she’s lying! Tell them about our baby!"
Julian finally stepped out of the shadows.
He walked down the mezzanine stairs slowly, his movements robotic. Every camera in the ballroom swung toward him. The press was firing off hundreds of flashes a second, capturing the greatest high-society collapse in modern New York history.
Julian walked onto the stage.
"Julian, darling!" Victoria rushed toward him, reaching out to grab his arm. "Tell them! Tell everyone that she is just a bitter, sterile ex-wife trying to destroy us!"
Julian looked at Victoria’s outstretched hand. Then, he looked at her face.
He didn't take her hand.
Instead, Julian reached into his inner tuxedo pocket and pulled out a clean, white flash drive.
"Julian?" Arthur whispered, staring at his son in horror. "What are you doing?"
Julian walked past his father. He walked past Victoria. He approached the stage technician sitting behind the multimedia control desk at the side of the stage.
"Plug it in," Julian commanded in a hollow, dead voice.
"Julian, no!" Thomas Sterling screamed from the VIP section, lunging toward the stage stairs. "SECURITY, STOP HIM!"
Two of Emily’s private security guards stepped forward, blocking Thomas effortlessly and pinning him against the wall.
The ballroom lights suddenly dimmed.
