Chapter 5 - The Margin Call

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the sixty-story Vance Global tower in midtown Manhattan was engulfed in unprecedented chaos.
The executive elevator doors slid open on the penthouse floor, and Arthur Vance stepped out, his face dark with fury. The trading floor, which was usually a model of quiet, ruthless efficiency, sounded like a disaster zone. Phones were ringing off their hooks, financial analysts were running between glass conference rooms, and the red ticker on the main wall was flashing an ominous, plummeting line.
"Where is Thomas?!" Arthur bellowed, slamming his silver-tipped cane onto the polished marble.
Thomas Sterling—Victoria’s second cousin and Vance Global's Chief Financial Officer—rushed out of the corner suite, clutching a stack of legal documents. His shirt collar was unbuttoned, his tie askew, and his face was completely drained of color.
"Arthur, thank God you're here," Thomas stammered, wiping beads of sweat from his forehead. "We have a catastrophic situation. Valmont Global Capital... they’ve pulled the trigger."
Arthur frowned, stopping dead in his tracks. "What are you talking about? Valmont agreed to a five-year maturity rollover on the two point four billion debt. We paid the twenty-million-dollar processing fee last quarter!"
"They exercised the acceleration clause!" Thomas cried, handing Arthur a trembling document. "Look at the fine print on subsection 14-B! It states that in the event of any major reputational restructuring, leadership scandal, or unilateral dissolution of spousal joint ventures, the creditor reserves the unconditional right to demand full liquidity repayment within forty-eight hours!"
Arthur snatched the paper, his eyes scanning the terrifying legal language. "Reputational restructuring?! What nonsense is this?! Who is running Valmont Capital? Call their Geneva office! Call their managing director! Tell them Arthur Vance wants to speak with them immediately!"
"We called Geneva!" Thomas shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. "They said the account was transferred three hours ago to their North American subsidiary. The managing partner is already here in New York. And Arthur... that's not the worst part."
Arthur glared at him, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned bone-white. "Speak!"
"They’ve already shorted forty percent of our public float through proxy firms in London and Singapore. Our stock has cratered eighteen percent in pre-market trading! If we can't produce two point four billion dollars in liquid collateral by 5:00 PM tomorrow, Valmont has the legal right to seize our shipping fleet, our terminals in Newark and Long Beach, and our entire executive voting shares!"
Arthur felt a sudden, sharp pain clench in the left side of his chest. He staggered back against the wall, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.
"Two... two point four billion?" Arthur wheezed. "No commercial bank can liquidate that much cash in forty-eight hours! It's impossible! They are trying to bankrupt us! They are trying to execute a hostile takeover!"
"Who owns Valmont?!" Arthur screamed, his voice echoing across the executive floor. "WHO THE HELL IS BEHIND THIS?!"
Thomas shook his head helplessly. "We don't know! It’s a blind trust registered under the Sovereign St. Claire family in Luxembourg. Nobody has ever seen the principal director’s face!"
Just then, the glass doors to the executive wing opened, and Julian Vance walked in.
Julian looked like a walking corpse. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his hollow eyes. He hadn't slept a single minute. In his hand, he clutched a sealed manila folder.
"Julian!" Arthur snapped, his voice trembling with furious panic. "Tell me your future father-in-law, Senator Sterling, has arrived! We need the Sterling family fund to inject eight hundred million in bridge financing right now! Where is Victoria?"
Julian didn't answer his father's question. He walked past the screaming brokers, past the flashing trading screens, until he stood inches from Thomas.
Julian seized Thomas by the throat and slammed him against the glass wall.
"Julian! What are you doing?!" Arthur shouted, lunging forward with his cane.
"Tell me about Zurich, Thomas," Julian hissed, his teeth bared, his eyes burning with a dangerous, feral madness. "Tell me what you and Victoria were doing at the Badrutt's Palace Hotel in St. Moritz the same week I was in the intensive care unit in Switzerland!"
Thomas gasped for air, his eyes bulging in sheer panic. "Julian... Julian, let go! You’re insane! What are you talking about?!"
"I pulled Victoria’s private credit card statements from her father's corporate account this morning," Julian whispered, his fingers digging deeper into Thomas’s collar. "Two penthouse suites booked under your corporate expense card. The exact same week."
"Stop this madness!" Arthur roared, striking Julian’s arm with his cane. "We are facing total corporate annihilation, and you are having a jealous breakdown over your fiancée?! Let him go, you fool!"
Julian released Thomas, who crumpled to the floor, gasping for breath.
Julian turned to Arthur, his voice terrifyingly calm. "The firm is already dead, Father. You just don't know it yet."
Julian threw the manila folder onto the trading desk.

"Emily didn't leave empty-handed last night," Julian whispered. "She took everything that mattered. And she left us with the monsters we truly are."
