Chapter 5 - THE SISTER'S PACT

The next morning, Mae parked three blocks away from Sarah’s small, cozy house. The rain had cleared, leaving a biting cold in its wake. She pulled her collar up and walked quickly, glancing over her shoulder. Paranoia had already set in.
Sarah opened the door before Mae could even knock. Her older sister took one look at Mae’s face and pulled her inside, locking the deadbolt.
"What happened?" Sarah asked, her voice tight with worry. Lily, Sarah’s seven-year-old daughter, was in the living room watching cartoons, blissfully unaware of the collapsing world around them.
Mae broke down. For the first time in twenty-four hours, she let the tears fall. She told Sarah everything—the hospital, the crackling paper, the lies, and the terrifying files she found in Theo’s office.
Sarah’s face hardened from shock into absolute, terrifying fury. It was the fierce, protective rage of a lioness.
"He's a monster," Sarah whispered, hugging Mae fiercely. "We are getting Bea out. Today. Buster and Luna too. He doesn't get to keep a single breathing thing."
"He has money, Sarah. He has lawyers. He threatened to cut me off, to stop the surgery."
"He doesn't have a soul, but we have evidence," Sarah said, eyes flashing. "Bea gets the surgery today. You go to the hospital. I will rent a van. While he's at work, I'm going to your house. I’m packing everything Bea needs, and I’m taking the pets. You and Bea come straight here after she recovers. This is a fortress now."

Mae looked at her sister, feeling a spark of hope ignite in the darkness. "He might come after you."
Sarah walked over to a drawer and pulled out a heavy steel flashlight. "Let him try."
