The psychological toll of the game was immense. Every time Buster barked at a passing squirrel, Mae's heart leaped into her throat. Bea was recovering well physically, but she was haunted by nightmares of her father.
Mae spent the afternoon preparing. She wasn't just going to the police; she had contacted a federal financial investigator she found online, someone who specialized in massive corporate fraud. She had sent them an anonymous encrypted email with a tiny sample of the data. They were hooked.
As dusk fell, Mae looked at the bug. She needed to make Theo desperate.

"I'm leaving now," Mae announced to the empty kitchen, ensuring the bug caught every word. "I have the drive in my purse. I'll be walking to the station. It's safer if I don't drive my car."
She grabbed her coat and a decoy purse. She wasn't going to the police station. She was going to an abandoned parking structure three blocks away—a place she knew Theo would try to intercept her. She needed him caught in the act of threatening her, caught on camera by the private investigator she had hired with Sarah’s help to follow her.
