Chapter 10 - THE BUG
The next morning, Mae noticed Luna the cat aggressively batting at Bea’s favorite backpack, which Sarah had brought over from the old house. The cat hissed at the front pocket.
Mae picked up the bag, unzipping the pocket. Inside, buried beneath a handful of pens, was a small, black disc. A GPS tracker and audio bug.
Theo had planted it. He had been listening to them. Listening to Bea's tears, listening to Mae's plans.
Mae felt sick, but then, a cold, calculating smile spread across her face. If Theo wanted to listen, she would give him a show.
She called Sarah into the room and silently showed her the bug. Sarah gasped, but Mae held up a finger to her lips. She typed a note on her phone and showed it to Sarah: We feed him fake information. We trap him.
Sarah nodded slowly, a wicked gleam in her eye.
"Sarah," Mae said aloud, making her voice sound panicked. "I'm so scared. I'm going to take the flash drive to the police station downtown at 8 PM tonight. It's the only way to stop him. I'll leave Bea here with you."
"Are you sure, Mae?" Sarah replied, playing along flawlessly. "It's dangerous."

Mae left the bug on the counter. The trap was set.
