Chapter 8 - The ChaseThe rain became a wall.

David's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
"Call 911."
Leah struggled with her phone.
"David, I'm scared."
"So am I."
He looked at her.
"But I'm not stopping."
The dark sedan accelerated.
Seventy miles per hour.
Then eighty.
The highway disappeared beneath sheets of water.
A contraction ripped through Leah.
She screamed.
David felt something inside him snap into focus.
He wasn't a frightened son anymore.
He was a father.
And his family was behind him.
"911, what's your emergency?"
"My wife is in labor. We're being followed by a dangerous person. We need police assistance."
The dispatcher told him to keep moving.
Then the sedan pulled alongside them.
Lightning illuminated the driver's face.
His mother's eyes met his.
There was no apology.
No fear.
Only obsession.
She turned the wheel.
David reacted instinctively.
He braked hard.
Her sedan lost traction.
It spun across the wet highway and crashed into a muddy ditch.
David kept driving.
Every instinct screamed at him to stop.
But Leah was bleeding.
