Chapter 44 - Siren in the Blackout

David thrust the SD card into his phone via an adapter. A high-resolution video file loaded instantly. It was recorded by Arthur Vance in what looked like the cabin of the *North Star*, timestamped just three hours ago.
On the screen, Arthur’s weathered face looked directly into the lens, his hands trembling as he spoke.
*"David, if you’re watching this, it means I failed to kill her. It means Evelyn found a way out of the dark. You have to understand... thirty years ago, I thought I could manage her madness with money and silence. I let her take you because I wanted an heir, and that cowardice cost me my soul. But she hasn't just escaped her facility. She bought it. The directors, the transfer board, the transport guards—she used the overseas trust accounts in Zurich to buy everyone. She’s not taking Maya to hide. She’s taking her to the Blackwood Estate on Isle Royale. The private ferry is waiting for her at Grand Portage. If she reaches the island, the jurisdiction falls under private offshore maritime trust. You will never see your child again."*
The video cut out.
Suddenly, the hospital lights flickered once, twice, and died.
The hum of the industrial air conditioning ground to a halt. A heavy, oppressive silence fell over the corridor, broken only by the high-pitched beep of emergency battery-backup units and the distant screeching of hospital alarms. The secondary red emergency lights hummed to life, casting long, bloody shadows across the linoleum floors.
Footsteps echoed from the stairwell. Heavy, tactical boots.
David slipped into the shadows of an alcove beside a janitor's cart, his hand instinctively dropping to his waistband where he had tucked the Kimber .45.
Two men stepped into the red-lit hallway. They wore rain-slicked dark windbreakers with private security insignias on the shoulders, earpieces curled behind their ears, and tactical holsters at their hips. One of them held an electronic tablet displaying David's driver’s license photo.
"Target’s vehicle is out front," the taller man said, his voice flat and professional. "Mrs. Vance wants the loose ends tied before the northern border closes. Confirm the wife is in surgery?"
"OR 3," the second man answered, pulling a suppressed Glock from beneath his jacket with practiced calm. "We take the son first. Then we cut the oxygen line to the surgical suite. Make it look like a generator failure during the blackout."
David felt the last thread of his civilized humanity snap.
There was no legal system anymore. There was no restraining order, no police precinct, no judge who could save them. There was only a predator who had come to slaughter his family, and the monster he would have to become to stop them.
The two men moved past the alcove.
David stepped out from behind them.
Before the taller man could turn, David slammed his left forearm around the man's throat in a crushing sleeper hold, driving his right thumb directly into the man’s ocular cavity. The guard let out a choked gasp of agony, his fingers clawing at David’s arm as David dragged him backward into the alcove, simultaneously drawing his Kimber and firing two point-blank rounds into the second man's chest.
*THWIP. THWIP.*
The suppressed shots were barely louder than the snap of dry twigs. The second guard collapsed instantly against the wall, sliding down into a heap of limbs. David locked his grip on the first man's neck, twisting with savage, violent torque until a sharp *CRACK* reverberated through the empty hallway.
The body went completely limp.
David lowered the man to the floor, panting heavily, his eyes wild in the red glare of the emergency lights. He stripped the spare magazines, the tactical radio, and the keys to their vehicle from the dead man's vest.
He knelt by the door of OR 3 for a single, fleeting second. Through the small rectangular window, he saw surgeons working frantically under emergency lamps, Leah’s chest rising and falling beneath an automated ventilator.
"Live," David whispered against the glass. "I will bring her back."

He turned and bolted down the emergency stairs into the storm.
