Chapter 1 - The House That Was Supposed to Be SafeThe house had always been the one place where David believed the outside world could never reach them.

It was an ordinary suburban home—white walls, warm wooden floors, a small backyard, and a nursery they had spent months preparing for the baby they had prayed for. Leah had chosen soft colors. David had assembled the crib twice because he wanted every screw to be perfect.
But after what happened, the house no longer felt like a home.
It felt like evidence.
The next morning, sunlight poured through the windows as if nothing had happened. Birds sang outside. A neighbor walked a dog down the street.
Leah stood inside the doorway, one hand resting protectively over her pregnant belly.
She stared at the living room.
Her breathing was shallow.
David watched her carefully.
She looked exhausted, but exhaustion wasn't what frightened him.
It was the way she kept looking toward the corners of the room.
As if she expected someone to step out of the shadows.
David walked into the kitchen.
He opened the cabinets.
Every jar.
Every box.
Every bottle.
Anything his mother might have touched went into a black garbage bag.
Tea.
Spices.
Sugar.
Supplements.
Even unopened packages.
Leah watched from the doorway.
"David..."
"I don't care what it costs."
His voice cracked.
"If she touched it, it's gone."
He carried the bags outside and threw them into the dumpster.
Glass shattered.
For a few seconds, the noise felt strangely satisfying.
Then silence returned.
And the silence reminded him of the truth.
Throwing things away couldn't erase what his mother had done.
It couldn't erase the fear.
It couldn't erase the possibility that she might come back.
David turned toward Leah.
"I called a locksmith."
She looked toward the front door.
"A lock won't stop her."
David swallowed.
"Then we'll build something stronger."

He didn't know it yet, but by the end of the day, their home would become a fortress.
And their family would become the target of a war David had never realized had already begun.
